ATC SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
______________________________________
1. General_______(See figure 1.)
A. The air traffic control (ATC) system, when interrogated by a ground station, automatically transmits a pulse coded reply signal to the ground station. This reply signal is used to identify and locate airplane equipped with ATC equipment for air traffic control. The reply signal is used to display airplane range, bearing, altitude, and identity on the ground station radarscope.
B. The ATC system is comprised of two independent ATC transponders located in the main equipment center. (See figure 1.) Each transponder is connected to an ATC antenna located forward on the lower side of the airplane. A common ATC control module provides pilots' controls for both transponders.
C. ATC 1 transponder receives 115-volt ac power from the standby bus via the ATC 1 AC circuit breaker (Fig. 2). The operating power for ATC 2 transponder is derived from radio bus No. 2 via the ATC 2 AC circuit breaker.
D. Interface between the ATC system and other systems on the airplane is as shown on figure 2. Since the ATC and DME systems are both pulse coded and operate in the same frequency range, a signal suppression system is connected between the two systems to prevent interference.
2. ATC Control Module
__________________
A. The ATC control module is common to both ATC 1 and ATC 2 transponders. The control module contains controls, switches, and indicators to permit the pilot to operate and monitor the ATC system.
B. On AF ALL; AZ ALL; GN ALL; LH ALL; MD ALL; SN ALL; VM ALL, the position of the function selector switch determines the operational status of OFF, STBY (standby) mode A or B of the ATC transponder selected by the ATC switch. The ATC switch also determines whether CADC 1 or 2 supplies altitude data to the ATC system. The ALT REPORT or ALT RPTG switch enables or inhibits the selection of altitude data from the central air data system.
C. On AT ALL, the position of the ATC transfer switch determines the operational status: the STBY position disables the encoders in both transponders; position 1 turns on transponder No. 1, with No. 2 at standby; position 2 turns on transponder No. 2 with No. 1 at standby. The mode select switch enables the selection of mode A or B. The ALT RPTG switch enables or inhibits the selection of altitude data from the Central Air Data System.
D. On LH 001-010, 031-050, 071-081; AZ 201-219; SN 301, 302, the four identification coding select switches set the 4-digit code in the display window. The TEST button when pressed simulates a received interrogation. The MONITOR light indicates that the transponder is transmitting coded replies. The IDENT button when pressed causes an identification pulse to be inserted in each transmitted reply.
