 AF ATC SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

 AF 1. _______
General (see Fig. 1)
 AF A. The air traffic control (ATC) system, when interrogated by a ground AF station, automatically transmits a pulse coded reply signal to the ground AF station. This reply signal identifies airplane equipped with ATC AF equipment for air traffic control. The reply signal is used to display AF altitude and identity on the ground station radarscope. AF B. Two ATC systems are installed on the airplane each with its own AF transponder located in the main equipment center (see Fig. 1). Only one AF transponder operates at a time. AF C. A common ATC control panel provides pilot's controls for both AF transponders. The control panel comprises also controls for the TCAS AF system (AMM 34-45-00). AF D. ATC 1 transponder is a mode S which provides selective airplane AF identification, altitude information, data link capabilities and is TCAS AF compatible. AF E. ATC 1 transponder receives 115 volt AC power from the Standby bus via the AF ATC 1 circuit breaker (Fig. 2). ATC 1 is connected to two ATC antennas, AF one lower antenna on the bottom of the fuselage, and one upper antenna on AF top of the fuselage. AF F. ATC 1 receives altitude data only from CADC No. 1 by a synchro type AF supply. AF G. It receives also airplane coded address identification by discrete AF signals. AF H. Control information is sent from control panel to ATC 1 by an ARINC 429 AF bus and discrete signals. Interface with other systems is as shown on AF Fig. 2. AF I. ATC 2 transponder is a mode A, mode C, which provides only identification AF and altitude information. ATC 2 transponder receives 115 volt AC from AF Radio Bus 2 power via ATC 2 circuit breaker (Fig. 2). ATC 2 is connected AF to one ATC antenna located on the bottom of the fuselage. AF J. ATC 2 receives altitude data from CADC No. 2 only by Gilham coded AF discrete signals. Interface with other systems is shown on Fig. 2. AF 2. _________________
ATC Control Panel AF A. The ATC Control panel is common to both ATC 1 and ATC 2 transponders. It AF contains a common display and common controls for the pilots and two AF internal separate control modules, one for ATC 1, the other for ATC 2. AF B. The position of the function selector determines the operational status: AF (1) The STBY position disables both transponders; AF (2) Position 2 turns on transponder No. 2 with 1 at standby; AF (3) Position 1 turns on transponder No. 1 with No. 2 at standby; AF (4) Position TA ONLY and TA/RA turn on transponder No. 1 for use of the AF TCAS system. AF C. A test pushbutton on top of the function selector is used to trigger a AF self test of the control panel and of the selected transponder. AF D. The ALT RPTG switch enables or inhibits the selection of altitude data AF from the CADC system. AF E. An IDENT pushbutton controls the transmission of the special ident pulse AF when required by Controllers. AF F. The XPNDR FAIL light comes ON when a transponder failure is detected.

 AF A. They are installed in the main equipment center ATC 1 transponder is an AF ARINC 718 type on shelf E3-4. ATC 2 transponder is an ARINC 572 type on AF shelf E3-6. On shelf E3-4, partial provisions exist for the installation AF of an ATC 2, ARINC 718 type transponder.
