____ MIL-G-21164 greases that are thickened with clay and those thickened with lithium soap. Therefore, intermixing of brand name greases that employ different thickening systems should be avoided. Whenever changing a brand name grease, flush out old grease to minimize intermixing.
 (c)  
Lubrication blocks are used to show the part or unit you will lubricate. Each block shows you this data:

The lubrication method.

 -
The type of lubricant.

The access panel number is given above or below the lubrication block for points where it is not easy to find the area you must lubricate.

 (e)  
Figure 301 shows examples of lubrication blocks used in the manual. If it is necessary, more data is given near the lubrication block to help you lubricate the airplane correctly.

 (f)  
You must be careful when you lubricate sealed ball and roller bearings that have grease fitting. You can push the seal out with the grease, if you are not careful. To decrease the rate of grease that flows from your grease gun, a restrictor type adapter can be used. An Alemite Midget flush adapter No. 314150 is recommended for flush type grease fittings. You must stop the flow of grease if the shape of the seal starts to change, or if the grease comes out of the bearing.

 (g)  
If you apply the lubricant at pressures from 100 to 200 psi, the grease will usually get in the bushing or bearing. But, it can be neccessary to use more pressure for some areas. If you use more than 2500 psi, you can cause the fitting to come loose (blow out) from the joint. 1) If fitting "blow out" occurs


 a)  Do a check of the path of the lubricant for blockage or unwanted material. b) Install a new fitting.
 B.  General Purpose Lubricants
 S 643-002
 (1)  MIL-G-21164 and MIL-PRF-23827 are refered to as general purpose airplane lubricants. MIL-G-21164 is equivalent to MIL-PRF-23827 but it has 5% molybdenum disulfide. This makes the MIL-G-21164 black or very dark. The MIL-G-21164 grease can cause stains which are difficult to remove. Each operator can make the decision of which grease to use. The data that follows can help you make your decision:
 (a)  MIL-PRF-23827 is usually better for:
 1) Instrument bearings.

 2) Areas where a stain is not permitted and the area must look satisfactory. 3) When the friction of braking components could be decreased from the molybdenum disulfide. 4) If the relation of torque-to-tension of threaded fasteners could be changed from the molybdenum disulfide.
 (b)  MIL-G-21164 is usually better for: 1) For heavy loads, specially for steel surfaces sliding on steel surfaces.
 2)  Bearings where remaining lubrication is necessary to prevent or delay bearing failure if most of the grease is gone.

 (2)  BMS 3-33 is a general purpose aircraft grease which provides improved corrosion and wear protection compared to MIL-G-23827 and other grease types. BMS 3-33 is the preferred alternative to MIL-G-23827, BMS 3-24 and where MIL-G-21164 is listed as an option to MIL-G-23827.
 (a)  If you switch from one grease to another, continue injecting the new grease until you can only see new grease exiting the fitting. This keeps intermixing to a minimum.
