HARTWELL TYPE LATCHES - ADJUSTMENT/TEST

1. General_______
A. This procedure contains four tasks:
(1)
The first task is a test of Hartwell latches in the 5100, 5101, H502-1, and H503-1 series.
(2)
The second task is the adjustment instructions for Hartwell latches in the 5100, 5101, H502-1, and H503-1 series.
(3)
The third task is a test of Hartwell latches in the H856 and the H2040 series.
(4)
The fourth task is the adjustment instructions for the Hartwell latches in the H856 and the H2040 series.

A. Procedure

(1)
Make sure the door turns freely and is smooth with the contour at each latch +0.100 or -0.030 inch.

(2)
At each latch, do these steps:
(a)
Push the door to its fit and fair position at the door edge.
(b)
Lock the latch.
(c)
Push the latch bolt at the location shown.
NOTE: There must be 0.010 to 0.030 inch depression free play.
____ Do the adjustment task if you do not find this free play.

(3) Make sure the latch bolt overlap on the structure is the minimum
0.25 inch as shown (Fig. 501).

A. Procedure

(1) Add or remove the phenolic shims until you get the 0.010 to 0.030 inch depression free play.
NOTE: 0.030- and 0.040-inch thick shims are usually used to get the
____ correct adjustment (Fig. 501). The shim thickness can be different.

(1) Series H856 (With Adjusting Screw) and H2040 Latch
NOTE: H856 latches without adjusting screw can be tested in task

B. Procedure

(1) Make sure the door turns freely to be smooth with the contour at each latch +0.10 or -0.04 inch.

(2) With the latch closed, make sure there is no free play at the end of the latch lever. Also, make sure that thumb pressure only is necessary to latch and release the latch.
