Permit the fuel to go to the bottom of the tank before you open the sump drain valve.

Electrically ground the sump drain tool to the airplane structure.

AIRPLANES WITH THE ROD-OPERATED SUMP DRAIN VALVE;
Pull the actuating rod down.
(a)
Hold the actuating rod in this position until the fuel that goes into the container has no water.
(b)
Use a 0.5 inch ID hose and clamp that you can make locally to help you drain the fuel.

(5) AIRPLANES WITH THE TOOL-OPERATED SUMP DRAIN VALVE; Turn the sump drain valve clockwise and push it up to open it.
NOTE: You must hold the drain valve in this position.

(7) Do a visual inspection of the fuel in the container.
(a) Make sure the fuel is free from contamination.
NOTE: The fuel sample should be clear and bright.

If you see water in the fuel, continue to sump the tank until you remove all of the water.
(c)
If you see red dye in the fuel, do this task: Fuel Tanks Contaminated with Red Dye (AMM 28-11-00/701).
(d)
If you see other contamination, do these steps: 1) Clean the fuel sampling equipment with isopropyl alcohol and dry completely. 2) With a sterilized glass container, get another sample of fuel.
3) Do this task: Do a Detection Check for Contamination with Microbes or Fungus (AMM 28-11-00/701).

(8) AIRPLANES WITH THE ROD-OPERATED SUMP DRAIN VALVE; Release the rod to close the valve.
(a) Do a visual inspection of the fuel in the container.
1) Make sure the fuel is free from contamination.
