ENGINE OIL - SERVICING
______________________
1. General_______
A. This section contains procedures to fill the oil, change the oil, and flush the engine oil system.
B. The total oil tank capacity is 4.5 U.S. gallons (17 liters) for engine No. 1 and 4.75 U.S. gallons (18 liters) for engine No. 2.
C. When you change the engine oil, you do the steps that follow:
(1)
Drain the oil tank and accessory gearbox.
(2)
Fill the oil tank and accessory gearbox with the same brand of oil.
D. Oil should be added within 30 minutes of engine shutdown while the oil in the oil tank is still warm. This will ensure the engine is not over-serviced.
(1)
If the oil in the tank is cool or cold, the oil density has decreased so that too much oil can be added to the oil tank.
(2)
Too much oil added to the engine oil tank will not damage the engine. The extra oil will be blown overboard through the engine vent system.
(3)
The quantity of the extra oil can cause incorrect calculations for the oil consumption rate for trend monitoring.
E. The engine oil tank should be serviced after the final engine shutdown of the day, once each day, unless there are indications of excessive oil consumption.
(1)
There is sufficient oil quantity in the oil tank if the indicator reads more than 60% full.
(2)
The oil tank should be serviced if the oil quantity is less than 60% or if the oil consumption rate is excessive.
(a) Limits for the oil consumption rates are given in AMM 71-00-00/201.
F. When the oil system contains contamination, flush the system.
G. Try not to mix different approved brands (Ref 70-10-01/201).
H. When you change the fleet from one approved brand to a different approved brand, you can do so during servicing.
(1) If the oil change is between a type 1 and a type 2 oil, drain and flush the system.
