D. Drain the Oil from the Spline Cavity.

(1) Open the left fan cowl on the applicable engine if it is not open (Ref 71-11-02/201).

(2) Set the bucket below the accessory gearbox to catch the used oil. S 033-041-002
WARNING:_______ DO NOT TOUCH THE OIL SYSTEM PARTS WHEN THEY ARE HOT. THESE
PARTS STAY HOTTER THAN THE OTHER ENGINE PARTS AFTER AN ENGINE
SHUTDOWN. OIL SYSTEM PARTS THAT ARE HOT CAN BURN YOU.
DO NOT LET THE OIL TOUCH YOUR SKIN FOR A LONG TIME. YOU CAN
ABSORB POISONOUS MATERIALS FROM THE OIL THROUGH YOUR SKIN. OIL
ON YOUR SKIN CAN CAUSE DERMATITIS AFTER A LONG TIME.

Remove the drain fitting for the spline cavity from the accessory gearbox.

(4)
Let the oil drain from the spline cavity.

(5)
Remove the bucket.
(a) Discard the used oil from the bucket.

(6) Install the drain fitting for the spline cavity into the accessory gearbox:
(a)
Replace the O-ring that is on the drain fitting.
(b)
Install the drain fitting for the spline cavity into the accessory gearbox.
(c)
Tighten it to 180-220 pound inches.
(d)
Install a lockwire.

CAUTION: IMMEDIATELY REMOVE ALL OF THE OIL THAT FALLS ON THE ENGINE
_______ PARTS. OIL CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE PAINT AND SOME RUBBER PARTS.
(7) Clean the engine parts that have oil on them.

(8) Add oil to the spline cavity before you operate the engine again (Ref "Fill the Spline Cavity with Oil" task).

6. Fill the Spline Cavity with Oil (Fig. 301)

A. General
(1)
Leakage of the seal on the accessory gearbox will let oil flow from the accessory gearbox to the spline cavity. If the oil level in the spline cavity is usually too high, the accessory gearbox seal can be defective.
(2)
Leakage of the seal in the VSCF will let oil flow from the VSCF to the spline cavity. The input shaft seal can be defective if these two indications occur after you fill the VSCF with oil:
(a)
The oil level in the VSCF decreases.
(b)
The oil level in the spline cavity increases.

(1) D00068 Oil - MIL-L-23699, MIL-L-7808, or any oil that agrees with the specifications of CFM56-3 SB79-001.
NOTE: Refer to the marker on the VSCF to find the oil that is in

the spline cavity.
