 MAIN LANDING GEAR SHOCK STRUT - SERVICING

 1.  General_______
 A.  This procedure contains the task necessary to do the servicing of the shock strut on the main landing gear. You can have the shock strut in the different positions and conditions with or without lifting the airplane on jacks. Use the applicable procedure for each given set of circumstances. It is necessary to lift the airplane on jacks everytime you do servicing of the shock strut after repair.
 B.  There is no simple method to do a check on the fluid level of the shock strut with no pressure after any pressurization (such as raising the airplane by pressurizing the strut with air or nitrogen). The gas that will enter into the solution with the fluid will change the effective volume of the fluid. You must do the complete servicing procedure to correctly fill the shock strut.

 2.  Main Landing Gear Shock Strut Service - Procedure I (Strut in normal___________________________________________________ service - Airplane is not lifted on jacks), (Fig. 301)
 A.  General
 (1)  You must use this procedure to add fluid to a shock strut that has been in normal operation and inflated up to the time that servicing is necessary. It is not necessary to lift the airplane on jacks when you do this procedure. When you start the procedure, make sure you do not lift or move the airplane in any way that will allow the shock strut to partially extend until you complete all the procedure.
 CAUTION: DO NOT ADD SMALL QUANTITIES OF HYDRAULIC FLUID WITHOUT LUBRIZOL
_______ MANY TIMES. IF THERE IS NOT A SUFFICIENT QUANTITY OF LUBRIZOL IN THE FLUID, DAMAGE TO THE SHOCK STRUT CAN OCCUR.
 (2)  You can add lubricant to the shock strut when servicing. As an alternate method, a fully formulated fluid with a lubricant premixed is available. For regular servicing where relatively small amounts of fluid is necessary, it is acceptable to use hydraulic oil without added lubricant to fill the shock struts.

Shock Strut Fluids - General
 (a)  
All of the fluids that are listed here are compatible. Use any of these fluids to top off the strut even if the strut was originally filled with one of the other fluids.

 (b)  
Lubrizol 1395 and methyl oleate are heavy duty lubricants. They are added to the fluid to reduce the wear on the parts of the shock strut that move.

 (c)  
Use BMS 3-32, Type I to fill the shock strut for the first time when new, or after overhaul. There is a corrosion inhibitor in the MIL-H-6083 fluid.

 (d)  
Use BMS 3-32, Type I or Type II at the operator's discretion, for subsequent refills or to top off the strut. These two types of fluid are compatible.

 (e)  
If the proper mixture is not available, You can use MIL-H-6083 or MIL-H-5606 fluid without additives to top off the strut. Try not to do this, however, because the additive that is already in the strut will become more diluted. This will make it less effective.

 (f)  
It is not necessary to change the seals in the shock strut if you drained the strut and filled with one of the other fluids.

 (g)  
Use the premixed fluid, BMS 3-32 Types I and II, if it is possible. This is more convenient for the operator and will remove the possiblility of error that can occur when the operator mixes the fluids.
