F. Doors fastened with screws have the fasteners evenly spaced around the sides without hinges. To open doors, screws are turned out of nutplates in the underwing structure. The screws are retained in the door receptacle. Screws are loosened first on side opposite hinges, then fore and aft edges.
G. After opening doors with hold-open rods, the collar of the hold-open rod is slid down from its stowed position and used to secure the door open by preventing folding of rod assembly. When closing the door, the collar is returned to the upward end of rod and door is closed and secured.
3. Auxiliary Power Unit Access Doors (Fig. 3)
_________________________________
A. The two auxiliary power unit (APU) access doors are downward and outward opening clamshell type doors located on the aft lower surface of the tail section extending from fuselage station 2658 to 2742. Piano hinges attach the upper edges of the doors to the lower edge of the fuselage. Six tension latches in the lower inboard side of the right door hold the door closed. Pins and mating holes aft of each latch provide positive alignment of the two doors. A detent cable is attached to the right door and looped around a bulkhead stud to support the right door while the left door is opened. Two door stay rods, one located near the forward edge and one near the aft edge of each door inner surface, secure the doors open (approximately 15 degrees from perpendicular). The opening is large enough to permit removal and installation of the APU. The elevators and horizontal stabilizer may be operated up or down with the APU doors open without damage to either. Drain fittings are located in the forward and mid inboard edges of each door skin. A screen vent in the forward end of the left door relieves pressure differences.
B. The door gussets, doublers, clips, intercostals, hinge frame, and skin are fabricated from clad aluminum alloy sheet. Tees and latch frame channels are aluminum alloy extrusions. The latches, latch fittings, stops, and hinges are constructed of aluminum alloy or corrosion-resistant steel, as required. The door is formed to fair with the fuselage contour when closed and latched.
