747-400 MAINTENANCE MANUAL
EQUIPMENT COMPARTMENT EXTERIOR DOORS - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
________________________________________________________________
 1.  General (Fig. 1)_______
 A.  The equipment compartment exterior doors include the air conditioning access doors, auxiliary power unit (APU) access doors, and the main (forward) and center electronics bay access doors.
 B.  Inflight access to the forward electronic bay equipment compartment is gained by removing a panel located in the main deck floor (Ref 53-20-00/001).
 2.  Air Conditioning Access Doors (Fig. 2)_____________________________
 A.  Eight doors adjacent to the underwing keel beam and one slightly outboard provide access to the three air conditioning packs. All doors are located between the front and rear spars of the wing center section and form a part of the unpressurized fairing on the lower surface of the fuselage.
 B.  The air conditioning access doors are similar in construction and have three hinges each. The hinges are on the inboard edge of all doors except the door aft and outboard of the left aft heat exchanger, which is hinged on the outboard edge. Each door is of heat resistant cured epoxy, laminated glass faced, honeycomb construction. The skins, doublers, and inserts are of epoxy-reinforced fiberglass fabric. Gap covers are of phenolic laminated material. The outer surface of the door is coated with flame-sprayed aluminum, then painted with a polyurethane enamel.
 C.  The air conditioning access doors are fastened in the closed position by one of three methods: thumb operated latches, quick-release fasteners, and with screws. Doors with latches or quick-release fasteners also have a hold-open rod (Detail A).
 D.  Latched doors have nine heavy-duty flush latches; three near the outboard edge, four near the forward edge, and two near the aft edge (Detail B). The latches permit quick access to the equipment enclosed by the doors. A trigger is provided on each latch which is operated with moderate thumb pressure releasing the latch bolt from the closed position (Section A-A). A design feature of the latch is that failure of the trigger return mechanism will not cause the bolt to open. The exposed surface of each flush latch in closed position is similar in color to the adjacent enamel-coated fiberglass structure. The surfaces of the latch that are visible from the outside when the latch is in open position are, in contrast, a bright red fluorescent color to provide rapid visual inspection of the latch position.
