Prior to starting the refueling operation, the refuel valve position indicator lights may be checked by press-to-test. The fueling quantity (repeater) indicators may be checked by pressing the TEST GAGES switch. If the indicators are working properly, all segments of indicator displays will illuminate until the switch is released. If a tank has an inoperative indicator, fuel quantity can be measured during the refueling operation by using the fuel measuring sticks.

MAINTENANCE MANUAL
(4) If not all fuel tanks are to be filled to capacity, the operator can pre-select total fuel quantity to be onboard when pressure fueling operation is complete. The fuel quantity processor unit will determine the fuel quantity required in each tank to achieve proper fuel distribution and lateral balance. Optionally, the operator can pre-select fuel quantity for center wing tank only. Fuel quantity is set into appropriate indicator preselect display using thumbwheels and preselect switch. Preselected fuel quantity will appear on EICAS fuel synoptic. Preselected fuel quantity will be loaded in the following sequence:
NOTE: Preselecting a fuel quantity between 87,000 pounds and 88,000
____ pounds (39,000 kilograms and 40,000 kilograms) may result in EICAS status message M2/M3 < 3K SIG being displayed 5 minutes after fueling. Similarly, preselecting a fuel quantity of between 174,000 pounds and 176,000 pounds (78,900 kilograms and 79,800 kilograms) may result in EICAS status message M2/M3 < 6K SIG being displayed 60 minutes after fueling. Either message may occur when normal fuel schedule distribution results in a M2/M3 single point sensors disagree condition (one tank sensor covered by fuel, the other tank sensor not covered). Message may be cleared by transfering fuel to ensure M2/M3 single point sensors agree (both wet or both dry).
