 THE CHARGING VALVE MUST STAY OPEN. INTERNAL PRESSURE CAN BLOW OUT THE GLAND NUT AND CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS.
 WHEN AN AIRPLANE LOWERS RAPIDLY, IT CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS AND CAUSE DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
 (5)  Remove the valve cap from the charging valve at the top of the shock strut to deflate the shock strut.

 NOTE: Fluid in the shock strut will foam immediately as

Put the cloth padding around the shock strut inner cylinder below the gland nut (12).

This will prevent the sharp edge of the hole in the gland nut from damaging the inner cylinder. 1) The gland nut could accidently slide down the inner


 cylinder when it is unscrewed from the outer cylinder.

 CAUTION: CLEAN ALL HYDRAULIC FLUID, FROM LEAKS, FROM THE TIRES

Remove the gland nut.

 (a)  
Put a drip tray below the shock strut to catch hydraulic fluid.

 (b)  
Remove the gland nut lockplate (1) on the aft side of the shock strut.

 (c)  Use the gland nut wrench to loosen and remove the gland nut and move the nut to the bottom of the inner cylinder.

Do this task: "Raise Airplane" (AMM 07-11-11/201).

 (5)  
Remove Seals.

 (a)  
Move the scraper adapter (11) and the scraper ring (10) down the inner cylinder to the removed gland nut.

 (b)  
Lift the airplane higher with jacks, and work out the lower bearing (7), the washer (6), and the seal adapter (4).

 (c)  
Examine the outer diameter of the lower bearing.

 1)  If you find corrosion or the outer layer is damaged, remove the shock strut (Ref Removal/Installation) and replace the bearing.

 (d)  
To prevent damage to the adapter, use a plastic tool to cut the active static seal O-ring (3).

 (e)  
Remove the backup rings (15) from the outer groove on the seal adapter (4).


 CAUTION: EXTREME CARE MUST BE EXERCISED IF THERE ANY NICKS OR
_______ SCRATCHES ON THE INNER CYLINDER. THESE WILL ALSO CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE SEAL ADAPTER AS THE SEALS SLIDE ALONG THE SURFACE OF THE INNER CYLINDER.
