 Examine the minor diameter of the axle nut threads.

 (a)  
Lift the main landing gear with the jacks (AMM 07-11-11/201).

 (b)  
Use the axle nut socket and remove the axle nut.

 (c)  
Use the machinists ID micrometer or the plug gage to examine the minor diameter of the axle nut threads.

 (d)  
If the minor diameter of the axle nut threads is more than 2.8785 inches or the plug gage can pass through the axle nut, replace the nut.

 (e)  
Use the axle nut socket and install the axle nut.

 3.  Main Landing Gear Torsional Free Play Inspection_________________________________________________
 A. General
________
 (1)  The torsional free play of each the main landing gear must be in tolerance to make sure the main landing gear shimmy is dampened.
 NOTE: It is important that you adjust the shimmy damper correctly
____ and tighten the apex nut of the torsion link to specified torque before you do a check on the torsional play of the main landing gear (AMM 32-11-81/501).
 B. Standard Tools and Equipment
 (1)  
Dial indicator gage - 0 to 0.5 inches

 (2)  
C-clamp - 12-inch

 (3)  
Wooden 2 X 4 - approximately 10 feet long

 (4)  
Sturdy box or platform - approximately 15 inches high with suitable mounting for dial indicator gage

 (5)  
Spring scale

 (1)  Lift the airplane with the jacks approximately 6 inches off of the ground (AMM 07-11-11/201).

 WARNING: MAKE SURE YOU DEFLATE THE SHOCK STRUT FULLY BEFORE YOU
_______ LOOSEN THE VALVE BODY. THE AIR PRESSURE CAN BLOW THE VALVE BODY OUT WHICH CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS.
 (2)  Slowly loosen the air valve at the top of the strut to deflate the shock strut.
 NOTE: The fluid in the shock strut will start to bubble immediately
____ as you reduce the pressure to ambient. Deflate the shock strut slowly to prevent fluid leakage through the air valve.

 (3)  Lift the main landing gear with an axle jack until the wheels clear off of the ground (AMM 07-11-31/201).
 NOTE: Make sure the axle jack is free to move during the free play
____
 inspection.

 S 486-004
 (4)  Attach a 12-inch C-clamp to the shimmy damper and compress the clamp to remove the damper motion (Fig. 601).

 (5)  Set up the dial indicator gage on a sturdy box or platform to read forward and aft motion of the inboard wheel rim.
 NOTE: The gage must be located on the forward side of the wheel on
____ the horizontal plane of the axle centerline.
