Procedure to Measure the Torsional Free Play


 S 866-007
 (1)  
With the help of a spring scale, apply a clockwise pull of 30 pounds on the 2 X 4 at 100-inch arm from the shock strut centerline.

 (a)  
Set the dial indicator gage to "0".

 (b)  
Loosen the load.


 S 866-008
 (2)  
Apply a counterclockwise pull on the 2 X 4 as in step (1).

 (a)  
Write the value on the dial indicator.

 (b)  
Loosen the load.

 (3)  
Do the steps (1) and (2) for a total of 5 cycles.

 (4)  
Find the average value of torsional free play.

 (5)
Make sure the average value you will get in step (5) is less than


 0.14 inch.

If the average value is more than maximum permitted, examine the parts or assemblies given below for allowable wear limits and replace the applicable parts:

 (a)  
The torsion links (AMM 32-11-51/601)

 (b)  
The shock strut inner and the outer cylinder of the torsion link attachment lugs (AMM 32-11-51/601).

 (c)  
The trunnion link to outer cylinder clevis joint (AMM 32-11-11/601).

 (d)  
The forward trunnion bearing (AMM 32-11-83/601)

 (e)  
The aft trunnion bearing


 S 226-014
 (7) If you replace one of the parts, do steps (1) to (6) again to make sure that the torsional free play is in the approved limits.

 F. Put the Airplane in Its Usual Condition
 S 086-015
 (1)  
Remove the 12-inch C-clamp from the shimmy damper.

 (2)  
Lower the axle jack and remove it from the airplane (AMM 07-11-31/201).

 S 616-016

 (3)  
Fill the shock strut with air to 250-psi extend pressure before you lower the airplane.

 (4)  
Lower the airplane off of the jacks (AMM 07-11-11/201).

 (a)  
Remove the jacks from the airplane.

 (5)  Service the shock strut (AMM 12-15-31/301).

 4. Main Landing Gear Torsion Links Apex Joint Inspection
______________________________________________________
 A. General
________
 (1)  The apex joint inspection is important to make sure the shimmy damper functions properly and the apex thrust washers or apex bushings are not worn such that the shimmy damper effectiveness is reduced.
 NOTE: It is important that you adjust the shimmy damper correctly
____ and tighten the apex nut of the torsion link to specified torque before you do this inspection.
