 1.  General
_______
 A.  This procedure contains a task to repair the axle and the axle sleeves of the main landing gear.
 B.  You can remove the cadmium plating to inspect the base metal for heat damage on airplanes on which heavy braking gives sufficient heat to melt the cadmium plating on the axle brake flanges. You can rework the flanges if the damage will fall in the given limits.
 C.  The repairs to the axle sleeves will be the blending out of scratches, scoring, and galling in the limits given below. You must apply alodine or primer to the axle sleeves after you rework it to prevent corrosion.

 D. Procedure to Repair the Axle of the Main Landing Gear
 S 038-002
 (1)  
Remove the lockbolt, the retaining sleeve, and the axle.

 S 038-003

 (2)  
Remove the sleeve from the axle with an approved puller.

 (a)  
If it is necessary, you can increase the temperature of the sleeve to approximately 200-f.


 S 168-004
 (3) Use an abrasive paper or finer and remove the plating by hand.
 NOTE:____Do not use power tools. The maximum mismatch is 0.003 inch.

 (4)  Examine the flanges for sign of cadmium embrittlement cracks by fluorescent magnetic examination procedure.
 NOTE: The axle can continue in service with cracks emanating from
____ any four of the twelve fastener holes and moves toward or to the outer periphery of the flange.

 CAUTION: DO NOT REMOVE MORE THAN 0.003 INCH OF BASE METAL.

 (5)  
If you find any cracks, continue to remove the plating and the base metal until the cracks will be smooth.

 (6)  
Apply an inorganic protective coating (Ref Chapter 51, Heat, Weather, and Oil Resistant Inorganic Protective Coating).

 (7)  
Apply a large quantity layer of grease on the axle lands.


 S 628-008
 NOTE: Do not remove too much grease from the inside diameter of the
____
 axle sleeve after installation.

 (a)  Install the sleeve by chilling axle and heating the sleeve (Ref 737 Overhaul Manual).

Align the bolt holes in the axle and the sleeve.
