CAUTION:_______USE CARE WHEN YOU REMOVE THE STARTER MOTOR. THE STARTER MOTOR MUST BE REMOVED FROM THE STARTER MOTOR ADAPTER IN A STRAIGHT LINE. OIL LEAKAGE FROM THE CLUTCH HOUSING BREATHER CAN OCCUR IF YOU DO NOT REMOVE THE STARTER MOTOR IN A STRAIGHT LINE. DAMAGE TO THE STARTER MOTOR CAN OCCUR.

Carefully pull the starter motor (1) in a straight direction from the starter motor adapter.

Remove the starter motor (1) and coupling clamp (7).
(g)
Remove the packing (6) from the starter motor (1). 1) Discard the packing (6).
(h)
If the quill shaft is broken from the starter motor (1), do these steps to remove the piece of the quill shaft that is broken from the accessory gearbox: 1) Loosen the clamp (14) that attaches the flexible hose to
the breather adapter (8). 2) Disconnect the flexible hose from the breather adapter (8). 3) Remove the two nuts (13) and two washers (12) that attach
the breather adapter (8) to the accessory gearbox cover. 4) Remove the breather adapter (8), transfer tube (9) and clamp (14).
5) Remove the packing (11) from the breather adapter (8) and two packings (10) from the transfer tube (9). a) Discard the packing (11) and two packings (10).
6) Put a rod in the breather adapter hole and push the piece of the quill shaft that is broken out of the accessory gearbox.
7) Remove the piece of the quill shaft that is broken. 8) Lubricate the new packing (11) and two new packings (10)
with a light coat of oil. 9) Install the packing (11) on the breather adapter (8). 10) Install the two packings (10) on the transfer tube (9). 11) Install the transfer tube (9) in the breather adapter (8). 12) Put the clamp (14) loosely over the flange of the flexible
hose.
13) Install the breather adapter (8) and transfer tube (9) on the accessory gearbox cover and in the vent tube adapter with the two washers (12) and two nuts (13). a) Tighten the two nuts (13) to 32-36 inch-pounds (3.6-4.1
newton-meters). 14) Connect the flexible hose to the breather adapter (8). 15) Install and tighten the clamp (14).

Make sure you install all necessary protection covers.

Remove the container.
