 (2)  
To determine the fuel level, the stick is gently raised until the magnetic latch is felt to engage. There is a positive feel in this position since the magnetic latch is strong and will jerk the stick into position. The stick is now read to determine fuel level in the tank.

 (3)  
If the measuring stick is being monitored during a refueling or defueling operation, the float and stick will move with the fuel level. However, since the magnetic attachment between the magnets of the stick and float causes a small friction against the housing, the stick and float will not move up smoothly with the fuel level, but in distinct jumps as the fuel level rises on the float to overcome the static friction. On declining fuel levels when defueling, friction will occur in the opposite direction. Calibration marks on the stick are set to read on rising fuel levels and the most accurate reading will be immediately after a jump of the stick. In main tanks No. 1, 2, 3, and 4 which contain three measuring sticks, when fuel is measurable on more than one stick, the stick reading highest must be selected for maximum accuracy.

The stick is returned to its original position by raising it into the base and with a slight pressure, the head is turned 90 degrees clockwise to lock the stick in place.

 FUEL MEASURING STICK - REMOVAL/INSTALLATION

 1.  General_______
 A.  This procedure contains two tasks.
 (1)
The first task removes the measuring stick.

 (2)
The second task install the measuring stick.

 B.  
Measuring sticks are found in each fuel tank, installed in a housing on the lower surface of the wing. The measuring stick for the center wing tank is installed in a housing at the bottom of the tank. For removal and installation procedures for the housings, refer to AMM 28-44-02/401.

 C.  
For all the measuring sticks but the one in the center wing tank, you can get access from the wing lower surface. Access to the measuring stick in the center wing tank is through an access panel below the lower left wing-to-body fairing.

 D.  
Each measuring stick is identified with a position number either on the head of the measuring stick, or on the side of the measuring stick in line with the part number.

 E.  
It is not necessary to defuel the applicable tank to remove a measuring stick from the housing.
