C. The measuring stick assembly consists of three separate subassemblies; a housing and float assembly which includes the stick housing, the float and necessary sealing and attaching features; a stick assembly; and a mounting base (not installed at all locations) that serves as a receptacle for the housing. The calibrated stick may be removed from the housing without draining the fuel tank. However, the housing and float must be installed inside the tank except for those sticks located in the fuel tank access doors.
Measuring Stick (Fig. 1)

A. The fuel measuring sticks provide a manual means of determining fuel quantity in the fuel tanks. The measuring sticks in the main and reserve tanks are installed in housings attached to the lower skin or tank access door. The measuring stick in the center wing tank is installed in a housing on the tank bottom and can be reached by opening an access panel on the wing-to-body fairing.
B. Each stick assembly consists of the stick, stick bearing, head, spring,
washer, retainer, and socket with two packings.Measuring Stick Housing (Fig. 1)

A. The fuel measuring stick housing guides the measuring stick in position and provides a barrier between the fuel and the measuring stick. The housing also holds the float in place.
Operation

A. Functional Description
(1) To operate the fuel level measuring stick, the stick is unlocked from the base by applying a slight pressure and a 90-degree counterclockwise turn to the end of the stick. When the stick is unlocked, it is lowered to the fully extended position. Depending on fuel level, a bearing located on top of the stick will magnetically latch onto a magnet in the float before full extension. In this event, a slight pressure should be applied to assure a full extension. At the fully extended position, the stick stops against a cushion giving a soft firm feel.
