 CAUTION: DO NOT USE MORE THAN 60 POUNDS (270 NEWTONS) OF FORCE TO PUSH
_______ THE LATCH HANDLE CLOSED. TOO MUCH FORCE CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE LATCH.
 (1)  
Make sure the thrust reverser is closed and latched.

Close the fan cowl panels (Ref 71-11-02/201).

 (a)  
Do not engage the latch No. 2 and latch No. 3.

Measure the clearance between the left and right fan cowl panel skins at each latch location.

 (a)
The clearance must be between 0.06 inches (1.5 mm) and


 0.40 inches (10.2 mm).

If the clearance is not in the limits, add or remove shims from the latch and latch keeper fittings to get the correct clearance.

If it is necessary to install shims, do these steps to install the shims:


 NOTE: It is necessary to symmetrically install shims (latch and
____ latch keeper) on the latch housing to prevent distortion.
 (a)  For the shim locations on the left fan cowl panel at the latch fittings (6 places), do these steps: 1) Clean the mating surface of the latch fitting with MEK. 2) Dry the mating surface with a clean dry cloth.

3)  If you use BMS 5-14 cement, mix the cement, 50% by volume, with MEK, 50% by volume.
 NOTE: It is not necessary to mix MIL-S-4383 sealing
____
 compound.

 4) Apply the cement mixture or sealing compound to the shim and latch fitting mating surfaces. 5) Let the adhesive to dry for 10 minutes, or until the surface is tacky, but does not move when you touch it. 6) Install the shim with a screw, nut, and washer. a) Tighten the nut.
 (b)  For the shim locations on the right fan cowl panel at the latch keeper fittings (2 places), do these steps: 1) Remove the nut and washer that attach the shear pin to the
 latch keeper fitting. 2) Clean the mating surface of the latch keeper fitting with
 MEK. 3) Dry the mating surface with a clean dry cloth. 4) Apply the cement mixture or sealing compound to the mating
 surfaces of the shim and latch keeper fitting. 5) Let the adhesive to dry for 10 minutes, or until the surface is tacky, but does not move when you touch it. 6) Install the shim on the shear pin with the nut and washer. a) Tighten the nut.
