GENERATOR DRIVE SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

General
_______
A. The purpose of the generator drive system is to convert mechanical power into electrical power. The generating device used is called an integrated drive generator (IDG), one mounted to each engine using a quick attach-detach (QAD) ring. Each generator drive system has an IDG, scavenge filter, fuel/oil cooler, air/oil heat exchanger, and air/oil heat exchanger valve in conjunction with a valve override solenoid and pressure switch.
Integrated Drive Generator (Fig. 1)

A. An integrated drive generator (IDG) is mounted on the aft face of the main gearbox at the 7 o'clock position. The IDG consists of a constant speed drive and a generator mounted side by side in a common housing. Other parts integral to the IDG are the scavenge filter and thermal relief valve. The IDG converts the variable input speed of the engine into 115/200-volt, 3-phase, 90 KVA, 400 |5 Hz power. The IDG weighs approximately 120 pounds (54 kilograms).
Scavenge Filter (Fig. 1)

A. The scavenge filter is a replaceable component, which filters the oil for the IDG oil cooling system. The oil flows through the scavenge filter, out the oil-out port, through the external air/oil heat exchanger and fuel/oil cooler then returns to the IDG through the oil-in port. The scavenge filter is located in the aft end of the IDG housing.
IDG Air/Oil Heat Exchanger (Fig. 1)

A. The IDG air/oil heat exchanger consists of one housing to cool IDG oil. The heat exchanger consists of a tube-and-fin type cooling system. Hot oil enters through the oil inlet, passes through the exchanger core, to the oil outlet port. The heat exchanger utilizes fan discharge air or
2.5 bleed air, modulated by the air/oil heat exchanger valve, for removing the heat from the oil. The unit is mounted on the intermediate case at the 4 o'clock position.
IDG Air/Oil Heat Exchanger Valve (Fig. 1)

A. The air/oil heat exchanger valve controls engine fan discharge or 2.5 bleed airflow through the IDG air/oil heat exchanger. The valve is connected to the air/oil heat exchanger and operates in a normally open state. The valve is a hydraulically actuated, two-position airflow control valve operating in response to command signals from the generator control unit (GCU) and electronic engine control (EEC). In the event of electrical signal or fuel pressure failure, the valve is designed to fail-safe open by spring loading the actuator in the valve open position.
