(3) Do these steps to examine the scavenge filter.
WARNING:_______DO NOT LET HOT OIL GET ON YOU. PUT ON GOGGLES AND OTHER
EQUIPMENT FOR PROTECTION OR LET THE IDG BECOME COOL. HOT
OIL CAN BURN YOU.
WARNING:_______DO NOT LET THE OIL STAY ON YOUR SKIN. YOU CAN ABSORB POISONOUS MATERIALS FROM THE OIL THROUGH YOUR SKIN.
CAUTION: DO NOT LET THE OIL GET ON THE IDG OR OTHER COMPONENTS.
_______ IMMEDIATELY CLEAN THE OIL WHEN IT FALLS ON THEM. OIL CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO PAINT AND RUBBER.
(a) Obey the warnings and caution during all of this task.

(b)
Remove the scavenge filter (AMM 24-11-04/401).
(c)
Do a check for deposits on the IDG scavenge filter element.
1) If the scavenge filter element shows a number of moderately scattered, small metallic flakes (bronze or silver colored metal) or flakes of generator insulation, these by-products are the results of normal IDG operation. Do not replace the IDG. a) If there are a large number of nonmetallic particles
(black epoxy flakes, sleeving, wire strands or other forms of generator insulation with no metallic particles), it should not be necessary to replace the IDG.
2) If the filter element shows bright metal deposits that can be clearly specified as chunks or pieces caused by breakage, replace the IDG.
NOTE: Nonmetallic flakes or slivers caused by normal wear
____ is not cause for removal of the IDG.
3) If a large number of small metallic flakes (bronze or silver colored metal) is present on the filter element, replace the IDG. Do the check for a filter element bypass condition.
NOTE:____Do not clean the filter element. The filter element should be sent with the IDG to the repair facility.

(4) Examine the scavenge filter for a bypass condition.
NOTE: The conditions that would allow oil to bypass the scavenge
____ filter are damaged O-rings, filter or a collapsed filter.
(a) Do these steps if you do not find a scavenge filter with a bypass condition. 1) Install the old filter and tighten the filter cover with
your fingers.
NOTE: Do not clean the filter element.

2) Replace the IDG (AMM 24-11-01/401).

Do these steps if you find a scavenge filter with a bypass condition:
(a)
Install the old filter and tighten the filter cover with your fingers.
NOTE: Do not clean the filter.

(b)
Remove the damaged IDG (AMM 24-11-01/401).
(c)
Do the clean IDG external oil cooling system task.
