AIR CONDITIONING - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. General_______
A. Air conditioning system equipment is used to convert hot pneumatic manifold air to temperature controlled conditioned air at low pressure for distribution to the various airplane compartments for airplane pressurization and ventilation.
B. Three air conditioning packs with identical components cool the hot pneumatic air. In each pack pneumatic bleed air is metered through a flow control and shutoff valve and is cooled in a heat exchanger. The air is further cooled by an air cycle machine (ACM) as required by the pack temperature control system. Ram air is the cooling medium in the heat exchanger during flight. During operation on the ground, a fan on the air cycle machine moves air through the heat exchanger. The air cycle machine consits of a compressor, turbine and fan. Cooling is achieved by expansion through the turbine which drives the compressor and fan.
C. Cool air leaving each of the air conditioning packs flows to the main distribution manifold. This manifold mixes the air from the packs and distributes the air thru the risers to the flight deck, crew rest area, upper deck, and main deck.
D. Cool air from packs 2 and 3 can also be partially or totally diverted to the lower aft and lower forward cargo compartments, respectively.
E. Hot trim air, at existing pneumatic duct temperatures, is added to the cooled air going to the various airplane zones. Trim air is added as required to obtain the desired temperature for each zone. A trim air pressure regulating and shutoff valve controls the flow of pneumatic air into the trim air manifold. Individual trim air modulation valves regulate the flow of trim air into each zone duct.
