EMERGENCY EXIT HATCH - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. General_______
A. Use the hatches to exit the passenger compartment in an emergency.
B. The hatches are plug-type and are on each side of the fuselage above the wing.
C. The emergency exit hatches open from inside or outside the airplane.
D. A detachable light above each hatch illuminates the hatch area.
E. A window is below the hatch release handle.
2. Description___________
A. Trim Panel
(1)
The trim panel is attached to the inboard surface of the hatch.
(2)
A handhold in the lower part of the panel will help you remove the hatch.
(3)
A window shade is part of the trim panel.
B.
Door Warning
(1)
The emergency exit hatches are not part of the door open warning system.
C.
Pivot fitting
(1)
The hatch is held at the bottom by a pivot fitting.
(2)
The pivot fitting engages a pivot hook on the hatch opening.
D.
Heel Pad
(1)
Two heel pads are attached to the bottom of the hatch on each side of the pivot fitting.
(2)
The heel pads push on the hatch opening to add more support.
E.
Handle mechanism
(1)
The hatch has a handle which can be used from each side of the hatch.
(2)
The handle has a lever on the inboard side, and a flush push panel on the outboard side.
(3)
There is a continuous seal around the edge of the handle.
(4)
The handle is attached to a torque tube.
(5)
Two torsion springs, one on each side of the handle, are attached to the torque tube and a wear plate on the handle frame.

F. Bellcrank
(1)
A bellcrank is attached to each end of the torque tube.
(2)
Each bellcrank turns in a spherical bearing which is held in a bearing housing.
(3)
One bearing housing is attached to the forward frame of the hatch and the other to the aft frame.
(4)
Each bellcrank has a latch roller that engages with a latch fitting on the hatch opening to hold the hatch closed.
G.
Stop fittings
(1)
There are six stop fittings on the hatch opening.
(2)
Stop pins on the hatch touch the stop fittings when the hatch is closed and latched.
(3)
The stop pins push on the stop fittings when the airplane is pressurized.
(4)
The stops also prevent to much deflection of the hatch continuous seal.
3. Operation_________
A. Open the hatch from outside the airplane:
(1)
Push the flush panel at the top of the hatch
(2)
Push the hatch inboard
(3)
Have an assisant hold the hatch inside the airplane to prevent damage.
B.
Open the hatch from in the airplane:
(1)
AIRPLANES WITH A HANDLE COVER ATTACHED WITH SCREWS; Hold the latch handle tightly with the handle cover attached.
(2)
AIRPLANES WITH A HANDLE COVER ATTACHED WITH BRACKETS; Remove the cover from the release handle.
CAUTION:_______BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU PULL THE HANDLE OF THE HATCH. IT IS POSSIBLE FOR THE HANDLE COVER TO GET CAUGHT ON THE HATCH LINING WHEN YOU PULL THE HANDLE OF THE HATCH. THIS WILL NOT KEEP THE HATCH FROM OPENING BUT MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE HATCH LINING.
(3)
Pull down on the release handle.
(a)
The handle turns the torque tube against the torsion spring load.
(b)
The bellcrank on the end of the torque tube turns and moves the latch rollers away from their latch fittings.
