A. Smoke Hood
During the donning sequence, the clorate candle is automatically
actuated. The adjustment straps are pulled to secure the oronasal mask
cone against the face. When the neckseal is positioned, the oxygen
generated by the chlorate candle inflates the Smoke Hood. It provides
adequate breathing volume and accomplish some purging of the Smoke Hood
with any excess gas generation. When the wearer breathes through the mask
cone, the exhaled breath is directed through the KO2 canister. It removes
water vapor and carbon dioxide and adds oxygen before the gas is returned
to the interior of the smoke hood. The breathing cycle continues until
the KO2 bed is removed. It results in a loss of active oxygen generation
capability and rapid increase in internal temperature and release of
moisture through the KO2 bed. The loss of oxygen generation capability
results in a reduction of the interior volume of the smoke hood.
Inhalation becomes difficult and the smoke hood should be removed.

R A. Full-Face Smoke Mask
R The smoke mask is connected to the oxygen cylinder and the ON/OFF valve
R is turned on. The oxygen flows through a flexible supply hose to the
R demand regulator.
R When the person breathes in, a diaphragm opens a demand valve in the
R demand regulator and the oxygen flows into the smoke mask. When the
R person breathes out, the diaphragm closes the demand valve (and stops the
R flow of oxygen) and opens a vent in the demand regulator. The exhaled air
R goes through a vent to atmosphere.
R When the smoke mask is put on, any unwanted gases in the smoke mask are
R removed with the adjustable purge button. The purge button is turned to
R the fully open position, pushed in and held. This operates the diaphragm
R and opens the demand valve. Oxygen flows into the smoke mask and forces
R the unwanted gas out of the face piece. You must release the purge button
R to stop the flow of oxygen.
R To get a constant flow of oxygen you must turn the purge button to the
R fully closed position. This operates the demand valve and provides a
R constant oxygen flow. You must turn the purge button to the fully open
R position to stop the flow of oxygen.

The oxygen mask is connected to the oxygen cylinder and the ON/OFF valve turned on. The oxygen flows through the supply hose into the reservoir bag. The flow indicator in the reservoir bag inflates and shows a green color. When the person breathes in, the oxygen flows from the reservoir bag through the inhalation valve into the face piece. When the oxygen in the reservoir bag is used, the ambient air valve opens and lets ambient air into the face piece. When the person breathes out, the inhalation and the ambient air valves close and the exhaled air goes through the exhalation valve. Oxygen flows into the reservoir bag for the next breathing cycle when the person is breathing out.
