After pulling a fire switch handle, rotating it discharges the extinguishing agent into the appropriate engine. Rotating the handle counterclockwise discharges one bottle, rotating it clockwise discharges the other bottle. Decreasing bottle pressure, by discharge or leakage, activates the pressure switch which illuminates the appropriate amber BTL DISCH light located below the fire switch handles on P5. The appropriate EICAS message also appears.

Fire extinguishing agent can be discharged to either engine from bottle A or bottle B or both. If both containers are discharged into one engine compartment, no extinguishing agent will be available to the other engine compartment. Extinguisher tubing runs from the bottles along the forward wing spar to each engine. Extinguishing agent discharges from outlet nozzles in the forward and aft sections of the engines.

Squib Test Module
(1)
The squib test module checks the integrity of extinguisher bottle squibs and firing circuit. Pressing the test 1 or 2 switch sends a signal to the appropriate extinguisher bottle squib discharge cartridge. The test 1 switch checks bottle A squibs for all four engines, and the test 2 switch checks bottle B squibs for all four engines. If the squib and circuit are operative, the ENG 1, 2, 3 and 4 lights (green) on the squib test module will illuminate.

Pressure Switch Test
(1)
Manually activating the bottle pressure switch by pushing the button or turning the ground hex key will test the discharge light circuit continuity. The amber BTL A (or B) DISCH light will illuminate and the appropriate EICAS message appears on the EICAS display indicating a successful test.
