 EXTINGUISHING - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
_________________________________________
 1.  General_______
 A.  The fire extinguishing system consists of engine fire extinguishing, APU fire extinguishing, lower cargo compartment fire extinguishing, lavatory fire extinguishing, and portable fire extinguishers throughout the airplane.
 B.  On replacement of fire bottle cartridges, the vendor part number, serial number, and a service month and year will be included on the cartridge. The service month and year is defined as date supplier makes shipment and is the date upon which life of cartridge is based.
 C.  Engine Fire Extinguishing (AMM 26-21-00/001)
 (1)  The engine fire extinguishing system is a gaseous smothering system designed to flood the engine cowling space with inert gas in case of fire. Four fire extinguishing supply bottles, two for each wing area located in the wing leading edges. Each wing pair of bottles are manifoled together to provide up to two discharges per engine via three nozzles. The bottle content is 13 lbs of Halon 1301 and each bottle contain two squibs, a fill/safety relief valve, and a non-temperature compensated pressure switch. Integrity of the squib circuit can be checked by pressing the squib test button on the P461 pilo's overhead maintenance panel. The fire extinguisher handles are located on the P5 pilot's overhead panel. Pulling the fire handle arms the system, closes the fuel, hydraulic, pressure regulating and shut off valve, and trips the generator field. After the bottle is discharged, the flight crew will be notifed the condition by advisory EICAS messages.
 D.  APU Fire Extinguishing (AMM 26-22-00/001)
 (1)  The APU fire extinguishing system consists of a single bottle containing 18 lbs of Halon 1301. The fire extinguisher bottle and a single discharge line are located on the forward side of the APU firewall. The fire extinguishing handle is located on the P5 Pilots Overhead Panel. Pulling the fire handle arms the fire extinguishing system, closes fuel, APU bleed air shut off valve, and trips the generator field and breaker. An APU remote fire control panel is located in the right wheel well. It contains an APU fire warning horn, a red APU fire light, an APU EMERG SHUT DOWN switch, an APU and an APU FIRE EXTINGUISHER switch. The flight crew will be notified of bottle discharged condition by advisory EICAS message.

MAINTENANCE MANUAL

 E. Lower Cargo Compartment Fire Extinguishing (AMM 26-23-00/001)
 (1)
Bottles of Halon 1301 are provided in lower cargo fire extinguishing system. There are two outlets on each bottle that are used for the lower cargo compartment. One outlet is to discharge the forward cargo compartment through two nozzle assemblies, and other outlet is to discharge the aft compartment through three nozzle assemblies. When smoke is detected in a compartment as indicated by the appropriate light on the fire control module on P5 pilot's overhead panel, the forward or aft arming switch is manually armed. This automatically shuts off certain other air sources to the affected compartment and provides power to the discharge switch for actuation. The bottles are discharged by pushing the DISCH button on the P5 pilot's overhead panel. After the discharge, the flight crew will be notified of the condition by advisory EICAS messages.
