Portable Fire Extinguishers (AMM 26-26-00/001)

The portable fire extinguishers are located on the upper deck passenger area, main deck passenger area and flight compartment. On freighters, the portable fire extinguishers are located in the flight compartment and the crew rest area. Two types of extinguishers are provided; Halon 1211 for electrical fires or all types of fires, and pressurized water for nonelectrical fires.

Auto Discharge Fire Extinguishing System (AMM 26-27-00/001)

A heat activated fire extinguisher bottle is located in each lavatory. The bottle is provided to automatically extinguish fires in the waste container. The bottle is filled with Halon 1301, and diameter of approximately 2.5 inches and volume of approximately


 10.6 cubic inches. When a fire or overheat condition occurs in the lavatory waste compartment raising the ambient temperature about 174° F, the tip will melt causing the bottle to discharge. The temperture indicator with self-adhesive backing is located inside the lavatory cabinet assembly. The temperature indicator is a thin vinyl plate containing four heat sensitive patches. Each patch will change color from grey to black when exposed to temperture from 180 to 250° F.

 ENGINE FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

General
_______
 A.  The engine fire extinguishing system is a fire smothering system designed to flood the engine cowling space with an inert gas in event of a fire. The system is electrically controlled by switches located on P5 pilot's overhead panel and has test capabilities.
 B.  The engine fire extinguishing system receives power from 28-volts dc hot battery bus through circuit breakers on the P6 main power distribution panel.
 C.  The engine fire extinguishing system is composed of two identical fire bottles located in each wing leading edge, a engine fire control module and a squib test module. Each bottle has plumbing to both engines on a wing, allowing both engines to receive one application of extinguishing agent or one engine to receive two applications.
Engine Fire Extinguishing Bottles (Fig. 1 & 2)

 A.  Each fire extinguisher bottle is located just inboard of the inboard nacelle in the wing leading edge.
 B.  Each of the four extinguisher bottles include two discharge ports, two discharge cartridges (squibs), a pressure switch and fill safety relief valve. The bottles are hermetically sealed by welding. Bottle volume is 630 cubic inches and fire extinguishing agent weight is 13.0 +.15/-0.00 pounds.
 C.  One discharge cartridge (squib) is located on each of the two discharge ports of each extinguisher bottle. When electrically detonated, the cartridge ruptures a retaining disc in the port releasing the extinguishing agent.
 D.  The non-temperature compensated pressure switch detects a decrease in bottle pressure and provides indication of bottle discharge to flight crew via an annunciator light and EICAS. The pressure switch can be manually tested using the ground test device located on the fire extinguisher bottles.
 E.  The safety relief valve is a thermal expansion overpressure rupture disc. If bottle pressure is too high, the safety relief ruptures allowing bottle contents to discharge through an anti-thrust cap into engine cowl. The filler port is for introducing the extinguishing agent and pressurizing gas into the bottle.

 A.  The fire control module is located on P5 pilot's overhead panel and receives power from 28 V DC hot battery bus through the following P6 main power distribution panel circuit breakers:
