If smoke or fumes do not appear, then there was an intermittent fault.

 C. Repair Confirmation:
 (1)  Do the task: Removal of Oil Contamination from the Air Conditioning and Pneumatic Systems (AMM 21-00-01/201).
 (a)  If the oil contamination removal procedure is run until no smoke or fumes are present, and if the problem does not occur on the next flight, you have corrected the fault.
 5. PROCEDURE 4: Smoke or Fumes in the Passenger Cabin or Flight Compartment
 -Stops with Recirculation Fan Off.
 A. Possible Causes:
 (1) Overheating of the recirculation fan or the related wiring
 B. Fault Isolation Procedure:
 (1)  Do these checks of the air recirculation system:
 (a) Remove the Recirculation Fan Filter (AMM 21-21-23/401).

 (b)
Examine the air recirculation filter to see if it is necessary to replace it. 1) If the filter needs replacement, install a new air

 recirculation filter (AMM 21-21-23/401).

 (c)
Do an Operational Test of the Recirculation Fan System (AMM 21-21-22/501) to see if the air recirculation fan or the related wiring generates smoke while it operates.

 (d)
If there is smoke from the air recirculation fan or the related wiring, then do the applicable steps below: 1) Replace the air recirculation fan. These are the tasks:

 Recirculation Fan Removal (AMM 21-21-22/401)
Recirculation Fan Installation (AMM 21-21-22/401). 2) Repair the applicable wiring. 3) Do an Operational Test of the Recirculation Fan System
 (AMM 21-21-22/501).
 4)  If the operational test is satisfactory and the problem does not occur on the next flight, then you corrected the fault.
 (e)  If no smoke or fumes come from the air recirculation fan or the related wiring, and the operational test is satisfactory, then there was an intermittent fault.

REMOVING SMOKE OR FUMES FROM THE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM -
__________________________________________________________ MAINTENANCE PRACTICES
_____________________
 1.  General_______
 A.  The oil fumes and the smoke from an APU/engine failure can get into the airplane cabin and cause contamination of the conditioned air. This procedure gives instructions to remove the oil contamination from the air conditioning and pneumatic systems. You must first isolate the cause of the oil contamination and repair the problem before you do this procedure.
 B.  The APU is the most likely source of the smoke or odors. An APU failure can release oil into the air conditioning system. Oil, glycol, or hydraulic fluid ingested into the inlet of the APU is another possible source of the contamination.
 C.  Once oil has entered the pneumatic and/or air conditioning system, it tends to accumulate in the heat exchangers or precoolers. The oil, hydraulic fluid, or glycol vaporizes at higher temperatures and enters the cabin.
 D.  Do not do this procedure with the crew and passengers on board, since this procedure generates a high concentration of smoke.
