CONE/REAR FUSELAGE - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION______________________________________________
1. General_______ The cone/rear fuselage extends from FR70 to FR77.

A. Cone/Rear Fuselage Shell Structure
(1) The cone/rear fuselage is part of the unpressurized area of the fuselage. The main structure of the cone/rear fuselage is made mainly of aluminum alloy. It has frames, stringers and skin-plates, they are riveted together to make the cone/rear fuselage shell.
R R (2) The rear pressure bulkhead is installed at FR70. It is the diaphragm that seperates the pressurized rear fuselage from the unpressurized cone/rear fuselage.
B. Cone/Rear Fuselage Access
R (1) An access door 312AR is installed on the lower, RH side of the cone/rear fuselage between FR71 and FR72.
R R (2) An aluminum cover protects the rear face of the rear pressure bulkhead. The cover is installed adjacent to the access door 312AR.
(3) A work platform is installed at the lower forward part of the cone/rear fuselage.
C. Jacking Point
R R (1) A jacking point, installed between FR73 and FR74 at STR34, helps to support the aircraft when it is lifted on jacks during maintenance.
(2) The panel 311AL covers the jacking point.
R R (3) Part of the APU air-intake structure is installed between FR76 and FR77, between STR32 and STR34, left and right.

D. Stabilizer Attach Points
R R R (1) The attachment fittings for the horizontal stabilizer are installed at FR77. Diagonal struts, tie beams and edge beams make the fuselage structure stronger.
R R (2) The six vertical stabilizer attachment fittings are installed in this area. They are installed in pairs at FR70, FR72 and FR74. The top part of the frames are made stronger and are also the fittings.
R (3) The tail-cone attachment fittings are part of FR77.
E. Systems and Components The cone/rear fuselage gives access to systems and components of the rudder and horizontal stabilizer. Cable harnesses and pipes for the Auxillary Power Unit (APU) are also routed through this section.

The main structure of the cone/rear fuselage are the frames, the stringers and the skin plates. They are made of aluminum-alloy and they are riveted together to make the fuselage shell. The support struts, the ties and the edge beams make the fuselage shell stronger.

A. Frames
(1)
The frames are the stiffeners that go around the cone/rear fuselage shell. They are made of aluminum-alloy and are machined or formed. The FR70 is fully machined and it carries the aluminum sheet sections which make the rear pressure bulkhead.
(2)
The top sections of FR72 and FR74 are machined and are made stronger to carry the load of the vertical stabilizer. The lower sections are made of aluminum-alloy sheets which are formed.
(3)
The frames in the area of the horizontal stabilizer cut-outs are made in segments. A system of diagonal struts and edge beams make these frames stronger.
B. Stringers and Skin Stiffeners
(1)
The stringers are the longitudinal stiffeners of the cone/rear fuselage shell. They are made of aluminum alloy Z-sections and are formed. They are riveted between the frames and the skin plates.
(2)
Skin stiffeners make the skin stronger in areas where there are no stringers. The skin stiffeners are riveted to the skin plates.
C. Skin Plates The skin plates are made of aluminum-alloy sheets and the stringers which are riveted to them make them stronger. The skin plates are preformed to the contour of the fuselage before they are riveted to the frames.
D. Support Struts The support struts make the frames stronger in the areas where the frames have to carry heavy loads. The diagonal support struts at FR77 are adjustable.
