FAIRINGS - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

General
_______ The dorsal fin 321AL is made of layers of glassfiber reinforced plastic over a honeycomb core. It is installed at the leading edge of the vertical stabilizer to fuselage joint. The dorsal fin helps the directional stability of the aircraft. It also makes the air flow smoothly around the joint and keeps turbulance to a minimum. The removal of the dorsal fin gives access to the HF and VOR antenna connections.

B. Get Access
R (1) Put the ACCESS PLATFORM 6M (20 FT) in position at Zone 321.

THE FLIGHT CONTROLS

THE FLIGHT CONTROL SURFACES

THE LANDING GEAR AND THE RELATED DOORS
-COMPONENTS THAT MOVE.
(2)
Remove and discard the self-adhesive disc from the hoisting point (1).
(3)
Remove and retain the plastic plug from the hoisting point (1).
(4)
Install the hoisting lug (2) in the hoisting point (1) with the eye-end out.
R (5) Put the CRANE HEIGHT 10 M (33 FT) in position.
(6) Attach the SLING - DORSAL FIN, LEADING EDGES, END CAP (98D55307531001) to the hoisting lug (2).

4. Procedure

Subtask 53-45-11-020-050
A. Removal:
(1)
Remove the screws (3) from the dorsal fin (4). NOTE : Identify the length of the screws for the installation
____
procedure.
(2)
With the aid of the crane, carefully disengage and lift the dorsal fin (4) from the aircraft.
NOTE : The HF antenna is installed below the dorsal fin.
____
(3)
Lower the dorsal fin (4) on to a satisfactory support.
(4)
Disconnect the sling.
