7) Calculate the freeplay of the left hinge bearing (X):
NOTE: Where D1 is the value on the dial indicator, STD-1238 and W is the weight
applied to the stabilizer.
X = D1 - (W multiplied by 0.0000155)
a) If the "X" value is negative, then the "X" value is equal to zero.
(b) Measure the freeplay of the right hinge bearing (Y):
1) Attach an dial indicator, STD-1238 with a mount, STD-1279 to the right side of the
fuselage at the rear spar connector of the stabilizer.
a) Make sure that the plunger of the dial indicator, STD-1238 pushes against the
stabilizer lower surface at a minimum 0.13 inch (3.2 millimeters).
2) Set the dial indicator, STD-1238 to zero.

3) Use the weight to slowly apply a force, ‘‘W’’, of 440 +/- 50 pounds (200 +/- 23
kilograms) to the outboard end of the right stabilizer above the front spar.
NOTE: When recording the weights during this freeplay measurement task, the
weights should be recorded in pounds and not in kilograms. The calculation
for freeplay, X, uses a multiplier that is calculated using pounds for a weight
measurement, not kilograms. Using metric equivalents in the equation that
determines the freeplay value X, will cause the calculated freeplay value to be
in error.

(2) Do a check of the freeplay for the stabilizer jackscrew (which is referred to as "Z"):
(a) Make sure the stabilizer is at 4 units of trim.
(b) Attach an dial indicator, STD-1238 with a mount, STD-1279 to the body station 1088
bulkhead structure.
1) Make sure that the plunger of the dial indicator, STD-1238 pushes against the stabilizer
lower surface at a minimum dial travel of 0.13 inch (3.2 millimeters).
(c) Set the dial indicator, STD-1238 to zero.
(d) Measure the freeplay of the stabilizer jackscrew (Z):
1) Use the weight to slowly apply a force of 220 +/- 25 pounds (100 +/- 11 kilograms)
each to the top surface of the left and right stabilizers, next to the fuselage along the
stabilizer front spar (the total force is referred to as value "W").
2) Record the value from the dial indicator, STD-1238 reading as "D3".
3) Slowly remove the weight from the left and right stabilizers.
4) Calculate the freeplay of the stabilizer jackscrew (Z):
NOTE: Where D3 is the value on the dial indicator, STD-1238 and W is the force
applied to the stabilizer.
