(2) Make a record of the force necessary to turn the control wheel approximately 30 degrees
counterclockwise.

(3) Divide the counterclockwise force by the clockwise force to get the force ratio.

(4) Use the force ratio to find the correct length change for the control rod (Figure 508).
NOTE: For the left or right aileron balance tab, you must change the length of the control rods
in sets. The adjustment of the two control rods must be the same amount. It is
recommended that you split the adjustment equally between the left and right control
rod sets.
(a) To correct high left forces (control wheel counterclockwise), do one of these steps:
1) Make the left control rod set shorter.
2) Make the right control rod set longer.
3) Make the left control rod set shorter and make the right control rod set longer.
(b) To correct high right forces (control wheel clockwise), do one of these steps:
1) Make the right control rod set shorter.
2) Make the left control rod set longer.
3) Make the right control rod set shorter and make the left control rod set longer.

(5) Adjust the aileron balance tab [111] (Figure 509):
(a) Do these steps to gain access to the control rods [113]:
1) Move the aileron trailing edge to the down position.
2) Remove the bolts [122] that attach the forward removable fairing [123] to the aileron
[112].
3) Remove the bolts [120] that attach the aft removable fairing [121] to the aileron balance
tab [111].
(b) Loosen the jamnuts [124] and [126] on the control rods [113].
(c) Do these steps if coarse adjustment is necessary;
1) Remove the pins [119], nuts [118], washers [117], bushings [116], washers [115] and
bolts [114] to disconnect the control rods [113] from the aileron balance tab [111].
2) Turn the rod ends on the control rods [113] for adjustment.
NOTE: One-half turn of the rod end lengthens the control rod 0.021 inch (0.53
millimeter). One-half turn of the rod end and the barrel [85] together changes
the position of the tab trailing edge 0.025 inch (0.64 millimeter).
a) To raise the trailing edge of the aileron balance tab [111], lengthen the control rods
[113].
b) To lower the trailing edge of the aileron balance tab [111], shorten the control rods
[113].
3) Connect the control rods [113] to the aileron balance tab [111];
a) Install the bushings [116], washers [115] and [117], bolts [114] and nuts [118].

b) If there is binding between the control rod [113] and the bolt [114] or deflection of
the control rods [113], adjust the control rod length.
c) Make sure there is a minimum of 0.0150 inch (0.38 millimeter) gap between the
bushing [116] and the washer [115].
d) Tighten the nuts [118] to 50-80 pound-inches (5.6-9.0 newton-meters).
e) Install the pins [119].
(d) Do these steps if fine adjustment is necessary:
1) Turn the barrel [125] on the control rods [113].
NOTE: One turn of the barrel lengthens the control rod 0.008 inch (0.20 millimeter).
a) To raise the trailing edge of the aileron balance tab [111], lengthen the control rods
[113].
b) To lower the trailing edge of the aileron balance tab [111], shorten the control rods
[113].
2) Make sure the threads cover the inspection holes in the barrel [125].
(e) Tighten the jamnuts [124] to 100-140 pound-inches (11.3-15.8 newton-meters).
(f) Tighten the jamnuts [126] to 80-100 pound-inches (9.0-11.3 newton-meters).
(g) Install the bolts [120] that attach the aft removable fairing [121] to the aileron balance tab
[111].
(h) Install the bolts [122] that attach the forward removable fairing [123] to the aileron [112].
F. Put the Airplane Back To Its Usual Condition
