FLIGHT CONTROLS SURFACES - INSPECTION/CHECK
1. General
A. This procedure contains these tasks:
(1) The inspection of the aileron and aileron tabs
(2) The inspection of the rudder
(3) The inspection of the elevator and elevator tab is now located in the AMM 27-31-32/601.
(4) The inspection of the horizontal stabilizer
(5) The inspection of the spoilers.

WARNING: MAKE SURE ALL PERSONS AND EQUIPMENT ARE CLEAR OF THE FLIGHT CONTROL
SURFACES, THE THRUST REVERSERS, AND THE LANDING GEAR. THESE
COMPONENTS CAN MOVE SUDDENLY WHEN YOU SUPPLY HYDRAULIC POWER.
THIS CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS AND DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
(1) To pressurize hydraulic systems A and B, do this task: Hydraulic System A or B
Pressurization, TASK 29-11-00-860-801.
E. Do a Check of the Aileron Freeplay
(Figure 601)
SUBTASK 27-09-91-220-001
(1) Do a freeplay check of one aileron with no movement of the opposite aileron or the control
wheel:
(a) Make sure the control wheel is at the center.
(b) Attach a mount, STD-1279, to the top wing structure (outboard of the aileron).

(c) Attach a dial indicator, STD-1238 to take measurements from the outboard corner of the
aileron trailing edge.
(d) Put the plunger of the dial indicator, STD-1238 approximately 0.1 inch (3 millimeters) from
the aileron trailing edge.
1) Adjust the dial indicator, STD-1238 to zero.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE YOU USE SUFFICIENT PADDING ON THE FORCE SCALE WHEN YOU
APPLY FORCE TO THE CONTROL SURFACE. IF THERE IS NOT SUFFICIENT
PADDING, YOU CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE CONTROL SURFACE.
(e) With the push/pull scale 0-25 pound (0-11 kilogram), STD-753, push up with a force of
approximately 5 pounds (22 newtons) (Figure 601).
NOTE: Apply the load to the aileron balance tab cutout rib (adjacent to the outboard edge
of the aileron tab) and centered within 0.5 inch (13 millimeters) of the trailing
edge.
1) Make a record of the travel shown on the dial indicator.
2) Slowly remove the force.
(f) Do not adjust the dial indicator, STD-1238.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE YOU USE SUFFICIENT PADDING ON THE FORCE SCALE WHEN YOU
APPLY FORCE TO THE CONTROL SURFACE. IF THERE IS NOT SUFFICIENT
PADDING, YOU CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE CONTROL SURFACE.
(g) With the push/pull scale 0-25 pound (0-11 kilogram), STD-753, push down with a force of
approximately 5 pounds (22 newtons) (Figure 601).
NOTE: Apply the load to the aileron balance tab cutout rib (adjacent to the outboard edge
of the aileron tab) and centered within 0.5 inch (13 millimeters) of the trailing
edge.
1) Make a record of the travel shown on the dial indicator.
2) Slowly remove the force.
(h) Make sure the total up and down freeplay of the aileron is not more than 0.100 inch (2.54
millimeters).
(i) Remove the dial indicator, STD-1238.
(j) Remove the mount, STD-1279.
(k) If the freeplay is not in the acceptable limits, do this task: Aileron Inspection,
TASK 27-11-11-200-801.

(2) Do the same freeplay check on the opposite aileron.
F. Put the Airplane Back to Its Usual Condition
SUBTASK 27-09-91-860-002
(1) To remove power from hydraulic systems A and B, do this task: Hydraulic System A or B
Power Removal, TASK 29-11-00-860-805.
