5. Aileron Feel and Centering Unit Adjustment

(1) The aileron feel and centering unit is referred to as the "centering unit" in this task.

E. Prepare for the Adjustment

WARNING: MAKE SURE THE DOWNLOCK PINS ARE INSTALLED ON ALL THE LANDING GEARS.
WITHOUT THE DOWNLOCK PINS, THE LANDING GEARS COULD RETRACT AND
CAUSE INJURIES TO PERSONS AND DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
(1) If the downlock pins are not installed on all the landing gears, do this task: Landing Gear
Downlock Pins Installation, TASK 32-00-01-480-801.

WARNING: MAKE SURE ALL PERSONS AND EQUIPMENT ARE CLEAR OF THE FLIGHT CONTROL
SURFACES, THE THRUST REVERSERS, AND THE LANDING GEAR. THESE
COMPONENTS CAN MOVE SUDDENLY WHEN YOU SUPPLY HYDRAULIC POWER.
THIS CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS AND DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
(2) Pressurize hydraulic systems A and B, do this task: Hydraulic System A or B Pressurization,
TASK 29-11-00-860-801.

(3) Make sure the springs [63] on the feel and centering unit [61] are not loose.
(a) If the springs [63] are loose, tighten the nuts [65] on the eyebolts [66] until you see 4 to 5
threads beyond the nuts [65].
(b) Do not stretch the springs [63] from free length.
F. Aileron Feel and Centering Unit Adjustment

(1) Shake the control wheels to make sure that the wheels are in the neutral position.

(2) Do this task: Control Wheel Centering Check, TASK 27-11-00-700-804.

(3) Measure the control wheel breakout force in the clockwise and counterclockwise directions:
(a) Install the adapter, SPL-1674 to the captain’s control wheel.
NOTE: If the adapter is not available, put a tangent force to the captain’s control wheel at
a 6.5 inch (165 millimeters) radius.
(b) Install the mount, SPL-1670 and the control column assembly protractor, SPL-1680 to the
first officer’s control wheel.
(c) Set the indicator on the control column assembly protractor, SPL-1680 to zero degrees.
(d) Turn the control wheel clockwise until the aileron starts to move.
1) Using a push/pull scale 0-25 pound (0-11 kilogram), STD-753. Make sure the force to
turn the control wheel is not more than 29.0 pound-inches (3.2 newton-meters) or 4.5
pounds (20.0 newtons).
(e) Release the control wheel.
(f) Turn the control wheel counterclockwise until the aileron starts to move.
