CAUTION:_______BE VERY CAREFUL WITH CARBON BRAKES. CARBON BRAKES ARE MORE EASILY DAMAGED THAN STEEL BRAKES. CARBON BRAKE DISCS WITH NICKS AND CRACKS ARE NOT SERVICEABLE AND CAN NOT BE REPAIRED.
DO NOT PUT FORCE ON THE HEAT SHIELDS OF A BRAKE UNIT WHEN YOU REMOVE OR INSTALL THE BRAKE UNIT. BENT HEAT SHIELDS FREQUENTLY CANNOT BE REPAIRED. A BRAKE UNIT WITH A BENT HEAT SHIELD WILL CAUSE SCORING ON THE WHEEL INNER SURFACE WHEN THE WHEEL TURNS.
(4)
Remove the brake unit (1) from the axle (Fig. 402).
(a)
Use a brake change adapter or a brake sling to remove the brake unit from the axle.
NOTE: To use the brake change adapter to remove a brake unit,
____ you must also have a brake change dolly. To use the brake sling to remove a brake unit, you must also have a commercial hoist. If you use the brake sling, use the brake sling that is correct for the temperature condition of the brake.
(b) Use the brake puller if it is not easy to remove the brake unit.
NOTE: The brake puller is only necessary when corrosion and
____ heat cause the brake unit to bind on the axle.
