ENGINE OIL DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. General
_______
A. The engine oil distribution system supplies oil with controlled temperature and pressure conditions to the engine bearings and main and angle gearboxes.
B. The engine oil distribution system includes a lubrication and scavenge oil pump, fuel/oil cooler with bypass valve and solenoid, main oil filter with pressure relief valve, engine air/oil heat exchanger and valve, last chance oil strainers, magnetic chip detectors, and a system pressure relief valve.
2. Fuel/Oil Cooler (Fig. 1)

A. The fuel/oil cooler is installed on the aft high pressure compressor (HPC) case at the 8 o'clock position. The fuel/oil cooler is a shell and tube type heat exchanger which includes a single housing with a common fuel passage and two seperate oil passages to fill the integrated drive generator (IDG) oil system and the engine oil system. The fuel/oil cooler decreases the temperature of the engine oil before it sends the engine oil to the engine bearings and gearboxes. Also, the fuel/oil cooler increases the temperature of the fuel before it goes into the fuel pump filter.
B. The lubrication oil goes into the fuel/oil cooler from the air/oil heat exchanger and is directed by baffles to flow around the tubes through which the fuel flows. Heat transfer through the tube walls increases the fuel temperature.
C. Fuel supplied from the wing tank boost pumps is flowed through the centrifugal boost stage of the fuel pump and through the fuel/oil cooler, which removes heat from the engine oil. The fuel then flows back into the fuel pump through the fuel pump filter.
3. Main Oil Filter Element (Fig. 1)

A. The main oil filter assembly includes a housing, a filter element, a filter pressure relief valve, and a system pressure (regulator) relief valve.
B. The main oil filter housing is attached to the oil tank housing on the forward side of the main gearbox. The filter element is a 15 micron nominal, disposable unit.
