OIL STORAGE - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

 1.  General_______
 A.  The oil storage includes the oil tank which stores and supplies a continuous supply of oil for distribution.
 2.  Oil Tank (Fig. 1)________
 A.  The oil tank is a pressurized, stainless steel weldment with an oil check valve to make sure there is satisfactory pressure to the lubrication stage inlet of the lubrication and scavenge oil pump.
 B.  The oil tank is installed to and partially incorporated in the aft face of the main gearbox casting at the 8 o'clock position. All connections to the main gearbox are internal to the main gearbox casting. A swirl-type deaerator is integral to the oil tank.
 C.  The oil tank assembly includes an oil tank filler cap, oil tank sight gage, heat shield, master magnetic chip detector, and a mounting boss for an oil quantity transmitter probe.
 D.  The maximum and useable oil capacities (in U.S. quarts) of the oil tank in an on-wing, installed attitude are as follows:

 E.  The oil tank filler cap is supplied with a positive locking feature which includes a spring-loaded lock, which is operated when the handle 45 degrees clockwise is turned to the CLOSE position and pushed down. The locking feature is released when the handle is lifted and turned 45 degrees counterclockwise to the OPEN position.
 F.  The handle on the oil tank filler cap has a pointer that shows if the oil tank filler cap is in the opened (OPEN) or closed (CLOSE) position.
 G.  An oil tank sight gage, on the top, aft end of the oil tank, is supplied to visually find if the oil quantity is more than 1 U.S. quart (1 liter) low.
 3.  Operation_________
 A.  Oil supply for the lubrication system flows from the oil tank to the inlet of the pressure (lubrication) side of the lubrication and scavenge oil pump. Oil then flows, with pressure, through the distribution system.
 B.  Scavenge pumps return the oil to the oil tank with large quantities of entrained air. The air is separated from the oil by the deaerator and is then vented to the top of the oil tank.
