INDICATING - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. General

A. The engine oil indicating systems described in this section include the oil quantity indicating system (79-31-00), oil pressure indicating system (79-32-00), low oil pressure warning system (79-33-00), oil temperature indicating system (79-34-00), and oil filter bypass warning system (79-35-00).
B. The engine oil indicating systems supply indication and alert/status messages of oil system condition on the main and auxiliary displays of the EICAS.

OIL QUANTITY INDICATING SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. General
_______
A. The oil quantity indicating system includes an oil quantity transmitter and uses the auxiliary EICAS for display. The oil quantity transmitter sends a signal to the EFIS/EICAS interface units (EIU's) which show the quantity of available oil in the oil tank. This quantity is shown, with a digital readout in U.S. quarts, on the auxiliary display of the EICAS in the flight compartment.
2. Oil Quantity Transmitter (Fig. 1)

A. The oil quantity transmitter is installed on the left side of the engine, and is installed to the top of the oil tank.
B. The oil quantity transmitter is a float type, magnetic reed switch tank unit. It transmits a signal which shows the quantity of available oil in the oil tank to the EIU's.
3. Oil Quantity Indication (Fig. 2)

A. The oil quantity indication is shown on the auxiliary EICAS display. For more data on the oil quantity indication, refer to Integrated Display System, 31-61-00/001.
B. The display shows the quantity of available oil to the nearest U.S. quart on a digital readout.
4. Operation (Fig. 3)

A. Functional Description
(1)
The system is operational when 12 volts dc power is applied to the oil quantity transmitter.
(2)
The oil quantity transmitter measures available oil in the oil tank by a float device, which triggers magnetic reed switches in a potentiometer and outputs a signal voltage to the EIU's.
(3)
The EIU processes the ratio of the reference and output signals for the oil quantity transmitter to find the oil quantity. This value is shown on the auxiliary EICAS display.
