 LANDING GEAR STRUCTURAL FUSE POINTS - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

 1.  General
_______
 A.  Structural fuse points are fasteners or components in the structure designed to fail first under excessive shock loads. Failure at these points minimizes damage to primary structure if components are subjected to severe impact loads. Landing gear structural fuse points and the figure number which illustrates the fuse installation follow:

The wing landing gear is designed to break free of the airplane under extremely severe impact loads. The rear spar, to which the gear attaches, serves as the closing bulkhead for the integral wing fuel tanks. To maintain integrity of the fuel tanks under excessive shock loads, structural fuses are incorporated between the rear spar and gear components. These fuses provide points between gear and spar sufficiently strong to handle normal operating loads. However, these points will give way under excessive loads before damage to the spar can occur, which would cause fuel tank rupture.

Under severe impact loads, it is not desirable for the body gear or nose gear to break free of the airplane. Therefore no structural fuses are incorporated in attaching these gear to the structure.
