 NOTE: Fluid in the shock strut will have bubbles immediately
____ while you decrease the pressure to the ambient pressure. Deflate the shock strut slowly to prevent the leak of fluid from the air valve.
 (b)  
Put a tray below the flow fuse (drain plug).

 (c)  
After you decrease all the pressure on the shock strut, remove the flow fuse and drain the fluid (AMM 32-11-02/301).

Procedure (Preferred Method)


 S 038-007
 (1)  
Remove the lower bearing assembly.

 (a)  
Put a cloth around the inner cylinder for the shock strut below the gland nut (9).

 (b)  
Lift the airplane or lower the truck until the chrome layer (approximately 11.5 inches) shows on the inner cylinder for the shock strut. 1) This permits the installation of the puller for the lower


 bearing/seal carrier (puller tool).
 CAUTION: KEEP THE GLAND NUT AND THE OUTER CYLINDER TOGETHER AS A
_______ SET. IF THE OUTER CYLINDER THREADS WERE REWORKED, THE GLAND NUT WOULD BE UNIQUE TO THE OUTER CYLINDER. A DIFFERENT GLAND NUT WILL NOT FIT THE OUTER CYLINDER TIGHTLY AND CAN CAUSE THE LANDING GEAR FAILURE DURING THE OPERATION.
 (c)  
Remove the gland nut lockplate. 1) Use the wrench adapter to loosen the gland nut (9). 2) Move the gland nut (9) down to the inner cylinder yoke.

 (d)  
Move the scraper ring down to the gland nut (9).

 CAUTION: CLEAN THE HYDRAULIC FLUID IMMEDIATELY FROM THE TIRES IF
_______ THE FLUID ARE ON THE TIRES. THIS WILL PREVENT THE TIRE DETERIORATION.
 (e)  
Put a tray to catch the hydraulic fluid when you remove the lower bearing (12) and the seal retainer.

 (f)  
Connect two bogie hydraulic jacks to the hoses and the pump.

 (g)  
Put the jacks under the truck beam jack pads.

 (h)  
Turn the top part of the jack to move up to tightly touch the pads.

 (i)  
Make sure the base of the jack are flat with the floor.

 (j)  
Attach the puller tool to the lower bearing with three screws.

 (k)  
Install the sleeve of the puller to the chrome layer on the inner cylinder.

 (l)  
Move the lower bearing down to the gland nut at the top of the yoke.

 (m)  
Push the follower (1) back into the outer cylinder (2).

 (n)  
Keep the follower (1) in the outer cylinder (2) with the gland nut lockplate and the screw temporarily.

 (o)  
Move the used seal (6) from the gland.

 (p)  
Keep the backup ring (7) for the future use with the
 replacement seal.

 

 CAUTION: WHEN YOU CUT THE SEAL, PUT A PROTECTION STRIP BETWEEN THE
_______ SEAL AND THE SURFACE OF THE INNER CYLINDER. THIS WILL PREVENT THE DAMAGE TO THE SURFACE OF THE INNER CYLINDER. THE NICKS OR SCRATCHES CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE INNER CYLINDER. THEY WILL ALSO CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE SEALS WHILE THE SEALS MOVE THROUGH THE NICKS OR SCRATCHES.
 (q)  
Cut the seal (8) from around the inner cylinder (13).

 (r)  
Use the plastic tool to prevent damage to the inner cylinder surface.

 (s)  
Remove the backup rings (11).

 (2)  Clean all parts fully with hydraulic fluid specified on the shock strut nameplate.

 (3)  
Examine that all the backup rings (7 and 11) are serviceable.

 (a)  
Replace the backup rings if they have nicked, scratched or damaged.


 NOTE: The recommended installation is to replace all used
____ backup rings with new backup rings. Use the used backup rings only after a fully inspection and new rings are not available.
