CAUTION: MAKE SURE THE LOWER SURFACE OF THE SLAT TRAILING EDGE AND THE UPPER
SKIN PANELS OF THE FIXED LEADING EDGE ARE SMOOTH BEFORE YOU INSTALL
THE LEADING EDGE SLATS. MAKE SURE THE SURFACE AND PANELS ARE ALSO
CLEAN AND FREE OF CONTAMINATIONS, NICKS, OR BURRS. DAMAGE TO
EQUIPMENT CAN OCCUR IF THE SURFACE AND PANELS ARE NOT SMOOTH AND
THERE ARE CONTAMINATIONS.
(6) Install the leading edge slat assembly [17] (Figure 401):
(a) Install the main tracks [21] on the fixed leading edge:
1) Install the downstops [22] to the main tracks [21]:
a) Get access to the downstops [22] through the access holes in the track ribs.
2) Apply compound, C00913 to the sleeves [25].
3) Install the sleeves [25], downstops [22] and stop locators [26] on the main tracks [21].
a) Install the downstops [22] with the two marks point forward, which is the nominal
position.
NOTE: The downstop [22] has three positions. The position with one mark point
forward has the least preload, the position with three marks has the most
preload. The position with two marks is the nominal position.
4) Install the bolts [24], washers [23] and nuts [27].
NOTE: The head of the bolt [24] must be on the outboard of the main track [21] at all
locations.
5) Tighten the nuts [27] to 50-80 pound-inches (5.6-9.0 newton-meters), or the bolts [24] to
72-88 pound-inches (8.1-9.9 newton-meters).
NOTE: The recommended method is to tighten the nuts.
The optional method is to tighten the bolts.
(b) Attach the auxiliary arms [28] to the auxiliary tracks [29].
1) Install the auxiliary arm roller bearings [44] to the auxiliary tracks [29].

2) Install the bolts [46], washers [47], detent arm roller bearings [45], spacers [48], washer
[42], targets [43], and nuts [41].
a) Add washer [42] under the nut [41] if and as it is necessary to align the cotter pin
hole in the bolt [46] with the slot in the nut [41].
3) Tighten the nuts [41] to 95-160 pound-inches (10.7-18.1 newton-meters), or the bolts [46]
to 144-176 pound-inches (16.3-19.9 newton-meters).
NOTE: The recommended method is to tighten the nuts.
The optional method is to tighten the bolts.
4) Install the pin [40].

(7) If you installed the sling, SPL-2041, remove the sling, SPL-2041 from the leading edge slat
assembly [17] (Figure 402):
(a) Hold and remove the spreader bar [62] from the overhead hoist.
(b) Remove the strap assembly [61] from end fittings [63] and the wedges [69].
(c) Remove the screws [67] and washers [68] to remove the end fittings [63].
(d) Remove the nuts [66], washers [65] and bolts [64] to remove the strap assembly [61] from
bottom of the leading edge slat assembly [17].
(e) Remove the wedges [69] from the leading edge slat assembly [17].

(8) Manually retract the leading edge slat.
(a) Make sure the main tracks move parallel with each other.
(b) Make sure the main tracks can move freely on the rollers.

(9) Do this task: Reactivate the Leading Edge Flaps and Slats, TASK 27-81-00-440-801.

(10) Use hydraulic power to extend the slat actuator [9] to the 10-unit position. To extend the slat
actuator [9], do this task: Leading Edge Flaps and Slats Extension, TASK 27-81-00-860-803.

(11) Make sure the slat assembly [17] is in the correct position (View A-A):
NOTE: The actuator end fitting [14] must be extended forward of the lug [13]. This allows the
slat actuator [9] to be preloaded against the slat assembly [17] when it is fully extended.
(a) Use the gage assembly, which is part of the kit, SPL-1739, to make sure the actuator end
fitting [14] is extended 0.0050-0.1000 inch (0.13-2.54 millimeters) farther than the lug [13] on
the slat assembly [17].
NOTE: It is not necessary to take any measurements when using the gage assembly.
(b) If the actuator end fitting [14] is not extended 0.0050-0.1000 inch (0.13-2.54 millimeters)
farther than the lug [13], adjust the downstop [22] on the main tracks [21]:
NOTE: The downstop [22] has three positions. The position with one mark point forward
has the least preload, the position with three marks has the most preload. The
position with two marks is the nominal position.
1) Get access to the downstop [22] through the access holes in the track ribs.
2) Loosen the nut [27] on the bolt [24].
