Defuel Operation Precautions

WARNING: DO NOT OPERATE HF COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM OR WEATHER RADAR DURING
_______ THE DEFUELING OPERATIONS. THE HF COMMUNICATION SYSTEM OR WEATHER RADAR COULD CAUSE AN EXPLOSION TO OCCUR.
(1) Do not operate the HF communication system or weather radar during defueling operations.

WARNING: DO NOT CONNECT A HEADSET AND DO NOT TOUCH CONNECTIONS TO THE
_______ AIRPLANE DURING ATMOSPHERIC ELECTRICAL ACTIVITY OR STRONG RADIATIVE FIELDS. LIGHTNING STRIKES AND HIGH DISCHARGE CURRENTS CAN CAUSE SEVERE INJURY.

Do not connect a headset and do not touch connections to the airplane during atmospheric electrical activity or strong radiative fields.

When thunderstorms or lightning are within a 10 mile (16 kilometer) radius of the immediate area, the defueling procedure should stop.

Strong wind conditions can cause a build-up of static electricity. Large charges of static electricity can develop on support equipment while parked as a result of the movement of dust particles and air currents during strong wind conditions. Strong wind conditions can also cause the unwanted movement of items or equipment which can hit the airplane or injure persons. Defueling procedures should stop if strong wind conditions are present.

Prepare for the Defuel Operation

(1) If the planned defuel operation will cause the fuel load in the left and right wing to be unequal, then do this task: Lateral Fuel Imbalance Limits.

(2) Install the door locks for the wing and body landing gear
(AMM 32-00-30/201).

(3) Make sure persons and equipment are clear of the leading and trailing edge flaps.
