 C. Splicing
 (1) Main rules
____NOTE : Splicing of EFC and sensitive cables is not approved as a permanent repair. Ref. 20-53-27.
R R  ____NOTE : You can use only three splices on a same length of wire (between two ends).
RR  Use of splices is not permitted: - in looms or installations that have a high degree of flexibility or movement - in a wire routing with a curve (small bend radius). - under a cable tie. - under a clamp or an other cable support type. - in a conduit or an other wire protection type which not permit to the splice to remain visible. - inside connector backshells . - under galley and/or toilet areas . - inside Fuel Tanks and Swamp areas.
(2) Allocation table of repair splices (Ref. Fig. 003, 004) The table that follows gives the splices that you can use for repair, in relation to the type and gauge of the cable.
R R R R R  (3) This repair procedure is related to these repair types: - 1C, 3G, 4C and 5C. - 1E, 3H, 4E and 5E. - 2E, 2F. - 1D, 4D and 5D.

 (4) Procedure

R (Ref. Fig. 005, 006)
 ____
NOTE : You must put splices horizontally or in a position that makes sure that no fluids can get into them.
 ____
NOTE : You must put the splices on the outer side of the bundle for easy access, identification, inspection or replacement.
 ____
NOTE : For a multicore cable or several single core cables, put the splices at different levels. There must be a minimum distance of 10 mm (0.3937 in.) between each splice. There must be a minimum distance of 100 mm (3.9370 in.) between a splice and the cable end.
 ____
NOTE : When the customer adds an item on the aircraft, he will give it a number from 9000 to 9999. Example: Repair of the wires.
-A FIN in the 9XXXVS series will identify the splice (for example 9001VS for the first splice that the customer installs on the aircraft).
 -
The customer will install a sleeve on each side of the splice with the 9XXXVS series number printed on it, in accordance with the splice FIN.

 -
The customer will raise a Customer Originated Change (COC) to include the identified VS in the WDM (AWM/ASM/AWL).

 (a)
Find the splice P/N in relation to the gauge and type of cable (see "Allocation Table of Repair Splices ")

 (b)
Install the heat-shrink sleeve(s) on the wire.

 (c)
 Install the splice identification sleeve.

 (d)
 Strip the wires.

 (e)
Crimp the splice. For applicable tools, refer to 20-43-00 SPLICES AND PRESSURE SEALS

 (f)
Slide the heat shrinkable sleeve(s) on the splice and shrink it as insulation.

 (g)
Attach the repaired wire(s) to the harness.

____________________________________________________________WIRE PROTECTION REPAIR PROCESSES - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
 _______1. General
R R  When the protection of a bundle is damaged or broken, the standard procedure is to replace it with a protection that has the same P/N or drawing reference. The chapters that follow give the repair procedures for the bundle protection installed at different locations on the aircraft.
 ____________2. Repair steps
R R  CAUTION : THESE PROCEDURES ARE NOT FOR THE CABLES IN HARNESSES (ENGINE, LANDING GEAR, FUEL TANKS, APU, ETC...) IDENTIFIED BY A PART NUMBER. When a bundle protection is damaged, do these steps: - Find the damaged protection, its identification and characteristics (type, P/N or drawing reference). - Find and correct the cause(s) of the damage. - Examine the protection to find the type of damage. Refer to fig. TABLE OF DAMAGE ASSESSMENT.
R R  ____NOTE : Be careful when you examine protection. The wires of the bundles can also be damaged and their repair can be necessary. Refer to chapter 20-53-2X - Electrical cable repair.
R R R  - A repair scheme and grade are given to each damage case. Refer to repair classification: Grade 0: No repair is necessary (permitted damage). Grade 1: Permanent repair. Grade 2: A check of the repair is necessary at each C-check. Grade 3: Temporary repair only, replace with new protection in accordance with the basic definition within 18 months but preferably at the next C-check. Grade 4: No repair is permitted (change the protection).
