FIRE PROTECTION - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
___________________________________________
1. General_______
A. Fire protection on the airplane consists of automatic fire, overheat and smoke detection, electrically activated fire extinguishing systems and portable fire extinguishers. The detection provisions include the engine fire and overheat, APU fire, lower cargo fire, equipment cooling smoke, wheel well overheat, lavatory smoke, wing leading edge overheat, and tail cone overheat detection systems. Some airplanes (FREIGHTERS) have overheat crew rest area smoke detection. Some airplanes (COMBI's and FREIGHTERS) have main deck cargo smoke detection. Fire extinguishing includes the engine, APU, lavatory, lower cargo fire extinguishing systems, and the portable fire extinguisher bottles.
B. Primary power is supplied from the 28-volt dc buses and battery bus for the fire and overheat detection circuits and 28-volt dc hot battery bus for the fire extinguishing circuits. All fire detection and extinguishing systems are automatically on as long as power is available.
C. Airplane fire protection consists of following:
(1)
Detection (26-10-00)
(a) This section contains fire, overheat, and/or smoke detection systems for the engine, lavatory, APU, lower cargo, equipment cooling, wheel well, wing leading edge, and tail cone areas. Some airplanes (COMBI's and FREIGHTERS) have main deck cargo smoke detection and/or overhead crew rest area smoke detection.
(2)
Extinguishing (26-20-00)
(a) This sections contains fire extinguishing systems for the engine, APU, lower cargo, main deck cargo (COMBIS) and lavatory areas; and portable fire extinguishers for the flight compartments. On NON-FREIGHTER airplanes, there are portable fire extinguishers for the passenger compartments.

DETECTION - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
_____________________________________
1. General (Fig. 1 and 2.)_______
A. The fire, smoke, or overheat detection systems give the flight crew visual and/or aural indications of abnormal conditions in the engines, lavatories, overhead crew rest area (if installed), main deck compartment (Combi's and Freighters), APU, lower cargo compartments, equipment cooling, wing leading edge, tail cone, or wheel wells. All systems are operative when aircraft power is available. Figure 1 shows the general areas that are protected. Figure 2 identifies the warning indications and system test switches for each system.
(1)
The fire warning bell sound comes from 2 multi-purpose speakers in flight deck. The master fire warning light indicators are located above captain and first officer's main instrument panels.
(2)
The fire warning bell and master fire warning light is activated when any engine, APU, overhead crew rest area (if installed), main deck compartment (Combi's and Freighters) or lower cargo compartment smoke, fire, or overheat condition is detected.
(3)
The P5 pilot's overhead panel contains a FIRE/OVHT test button. This button initiates a test of the fire, overheat, and smoke detection systems for engines, APU, wing leading edge, main deck compartment (Combi's and Freighters), and lower cargo compartment. The test results in flight deck fire and overheat indicators. By pressing this button, appropriate EICAS messages should illuminate.
