CWS mode is the only A/P mode available with the engage switch in CWS. In the CMD position, CWS is the applicable mode when a flight mode is not selected. Altitude acquire is an automatically armed when no flight mode is selected mode. The mode switches are illuminated when the mode is ON, and pressing the switch again de-selects the mode. When on the selected altitude and in altitude hold, the ALT HOLD light is off indicating that ALT HOLD cannot be de-selected using the ALT HOLD pushbutton switch. A similar situation exists after LOC and G/S captured. The APP pushbutton light is off indicating that the APP pushbutton cannot be used to de-select the approach mode. The IAS/MACH display and control consists of the speed display window, the rotary speed control knob and the pushbutton C/O (changeover), N1 (engine speed), SPEED, LVL CHG (level change), and VNAV (flight management computer) switches. These controls and displays are used for DFCS system control. The data is utilized in digital format and used by the A/T system (AMM 22-31-00), and the AP/FD systems. The switch legends use mode engaged digital data to operate the respective engaged (ON) legend. IAS/MACH selection is from 110 to 399 and 0.60 to 0.89 in movements of 1kt or 0.01M. IAS/MACH display is limited to the existing VMO/MMO. Additionally, the IAS/MACH LCD has flashing warning flags for underspeed and overspeed in the leftmost position. Underspeed (A) is displayed if the airplane speed is decreased to the minimum speed except in TO or GA. The A remains until the speed has been increased to 15 knots above the minimum speed. Overspeed is displayed when the airplane speed is greater than the VMO limit or speed is within 2 knots of the flap or gear placard.

The HEADING display and concentric rotary selectors provide AP/FD preset heading data. The smaller concentric knob selects the HEADING and the larger knob selects the BANK LIMIT. The output signal from the HEADING control is sent to the FCC, which processes the signal for use by the DFCS. The HEADING control knob provides 360 degrees of heading setting per revolution. Each knob detent provides 1 degree of heading setting. The associated HEADING indicator is actuated by the MCP. The heading data is in digital format for use by the FCCs and analog format for use by the HSI's. The BANK LIMIT control is a 5-position switch for selection of desired bank angle limit in 5-degree steps between 10 and 30 degrees. The selected bank angle limit is overridden for localizer mode. The COURSE displays and controls provide VHF navigation course control for A/P and F/D systems. The left display and control knob interface with FCC A and the captain's HSI. The right display and control interface with FCC B and the first officer's HSI. The encoder output signal from the control is sent to the FCC which processes the signal for use by the DFCS. In addition, the COURSE control knob positions a synchro resolver whose output is sent to the VHF NAV receiver. The interface to analog flight instruments is via synchros mounted on the same shaft as the encoder and resolver. The COURSE control knob provides 360 degrees of course setting per knob revolution. Each knob detent provides 1 degree of course setting. The associated COURSE indicator is set directly by the MCP.ALL EXCEPT AIRPLANES WITH -932 AND ON MCP; The ALTITUDE display and control provides altitude data for use by DFCS, altitude alert system, and flight management computer (FMC) system. The display readout is from 0 to 50,000 feet and is adjusted by the control knob in increments of 1000 feet with the knob in the normal position and in increments of 100 feet when the knob is pressed in. The display readout is 10,000 feet at initial system turn on.AIRPLANES WITH -932 AND ON MCP; The ALTITUDE display and control provides altitude data for use by DFCS, altitude alert system, and flight management computer (FMC) system. The display readout is from 0 to 50,000 feet and is adjusted by the control knob in increments of 100 feet. The altitude window will display the altitude knob value at initial system turn on. If power-up test fails 7 times, the displays will go inactive and the altitude window will display 50,000 feet. The VERTICAL SPEED (V/S) display and control provides climb and descent reference by synchronizing at point of mode engagement, or by adjusting thumbwheel control after engagement. The V/S can display between + 6000 feet/minute and - 7900 feet/minute in increments of 100 feet/minute above | 1000 feet/minute and increments of 50 feet/minute below | 1000 feet/minute. The display is blank when V/S mode is not selected or armed.
