Prepare the Window Frame and the Fairing Compound for the Repair.

 

 NOTE: Use the prepare procedure if the repair area is sufficiently large
____ to use a faceplate to shape the compound. You can repair a small area with a hand tool. On small areas, it is less necessary to make sure the new compound is fully hard before you install the window.

 (1)  Prepare the window frame for installation.
 (a)  Prepare the part of the window frame where the fairing compound is not there: 1) Lightly sand the area of the window frame.
 NOTE: You do not have to remove the old compound if it is
____ in good condition. If you cannot install the new window flush with the skin, you must remove the old compound.
 WARNING:_______THE CLEANING SOLVENT IS FLAMMABLE. YOU MUST BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE THE SOLVENT. IF IT STARTS TO BURN, IT CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS AND DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
 2)  Just before you apply the fairing compound, clean off the sanded surface with a clean dry cloth and cleaning solvent.
 NOTE: Do not use too much solvent.

 (b)  Prepare the window frame for the window from which the used fairing compound is fully removed. 1) Clean the surface of the window frame with a cloth and the
 solvent.

 2) Dry off the surface, while still wet, with a clean dry cloth. 3) Continue to clean and dry the surface until there is no soil that you can see.
 WARNING:_______THE ALIPHATIC NAPHTHA IS FLAMMABLE. YOU MUST BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE IT. IF IT BURNS, IT CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS OR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
 (c)  
Rub the faying surface of the faceplate with a clean cloth and aliphatic naphtha.

 (d)  
Dry off the surface, while it is wet with cleaner, with a cloth that is clean and dry.

 (e)  
To make the removal easy, install tape on the surfaces that touch the faceplate.


 NOTE: You can use Teflon tape, Teflon that was baked on,
____ Teflon cured at room temperature, or a brush layer of Ivory soap applied with a soft bristle brush.

 CAUTION: DO NOT ALLOW AIR TO BE CAUGHT IN THE COMPOUND WHEN YOU MIX IT.

 (2)  Prepare the fairing compound.
 (a)  You can buy fairing compounds in two part kits that are already measured (Refer to Table I for qualities of the different materials).

 E. Repair the Fairing Compound on the Window Frame.
 NOTE:  You must do steps 1 through 3 during the application time of the
____
 compound - Refer to Table 1.

 (1)  Apply the fairing compound to the window:
 (a)  Apply the fairing compound with a spatula or an extrusion gun.
 NOTE:  You must apply the compound to the areas that are not
____ smooth, the gaps and the voids of the window frame.
 Be careful not to allow air to be caught in the compound. You must not allow air bubbles in the compound.
 (b)  
Make the compound smooth and to the necessary contour.

 (c)  
Move the faceplate to its position in the window frame immediately after you apply the fairing compound.
