 (12) The vinyl interlayer core ply can develop cracks and shrinkage.  The vinyl interlayer has cracks or tears most often in the upper aft and the lower inboard corners of the No. 1 window (Fig. 202). The vinyl cracks can occur at the edge of the slip planes or the parting material anywhere around a glass cockpit window. The cracks usually look like a thick or a broken line or hash marks in the vinyl interlayer along the edge of the slip planes or the separator material. Usually, but not always, the cracks will be at right angles to the inner and the outer panes. The cracks are usually big enough that you can find them. Do not mistake the vinyl cracks with the wrinkles in the slip plane material. Replace the windows that have cracks in the vinyl interlayer. The vinyl core is necessary for the fail-safe capability if the structural inner glass pane cracks.
 NOTE: It is permissible for No. 2 windows, with the new type of
____ vinyl interlayer, to have a crack in the forward upper corner extending up to 0.50 inches in length into the "daylight area" (AMM 56-12-11/601).
 (a)  A crack on the vinyl interlayer is not a full break but it has a width when you look parallel to the face of the crack. A crack can occur at any angle to the surface of the pane. The direction of the crack depends on the direction of the applied force. The stress from a scratch or a craze can cause a crack to occur.

 CONTROL CABIN FIXED WINDOWS - APPROVED REPAIRS

 1.  General
_______
 A.  There is aerodynamic smoother (sealant) around all control cabin windows. The aerodynamic smoother can erode and have cracks. You must keep it in a good condition to make sure you can use the window a long time.
 B.  The fairing compound is on the window frames of the control cabin windows No. 1, 4 and 5. When the fairing compound is broken or there are chips, cracks, or damage, you must repair it before you install the window.
 NOTE: The fairing compound can be crushed around the ends of the spacers
____ installed with the window assembly. If this condition occurs, it is not necessary to repair the fairing compound.

 C.  Repair the Aerodynamic Smoother (Sealant).

 WARNING: TURN OFF THE WINDOW HEAT SWITCHES BEFORE YOU DO THE MAINTENANCE
_______ ON THE FLIGHT COMPARTMENT WINDOWS. A FAILURE TO TURN OFF THE WINDOW HEAT SWITCHES CAN CAUSE AN ELECTRICAL SHOCK TO PERSONS.
 (1)  Put the four window heat switches on the P5 panel to the OFF position.

 CAUTION:_______YOU MUST USE PLASTIC TOOLS WHEN YOU REMOVE THE SEALANT. IF YOU DO NOT USE PLASTIC TOOLS, YOU CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE WINDOW.
 (2)  Remove all the sealant that shows cracks, erosion, or is not bonded to the glass.
