 (3)
On control cabin windows number 1, 4 and 5, fairing compound is applied to the window frame structure to accommodate the small irregularities in the frame surface and to ensure that a perfectly flat surface is presented to the window seal.

 (4)
An aerodynamic smoother is installed on each of the fixed windows, in the gap between the window frame and the edge of the outer pane. The smoother provides aerodynamic flushness and protection against water entrapment. A nylon cord or thread is installed under the aerodynamic smoother to facilitate its removal.

CONTROL CABIN FIXED WINDOWS - MAINTENANCE PRACTICES
___________________________________________________
 TASK 56-11-00-352-002-B00Control Cabin Fixed Windows
___________________________
 A. General
(1)
These paragraphs give damage conditions for the windows that havethe glass panes. For damage conditions for window No. 3, refer toAMM 56-11-21/601.

 (2)
The visual qualities of the windows are very important. You must replace a window when you cannot clearly see through it. If it agrees with the steps in this procedure but you cannot clearly see through it, you must replace the window.

 (3)
A delamination is the separation of a glass pane from the vinyl core. It can be difficult to find unless you view it at an angle with indirect light. The area with the delamination usually looks smooth, although there can be some distortion when you look along the perimeter. The delamination occurs most frequently around the edges of the windows, and in the areas that do not get heat.

(4)
Delamination may result in arcing and ply cracking. It isrecommended that windows with delamination extending more than 3.5inches (96 mm) from the window edge be replaced.

 (5)
The delamination can look almost like these items:

 (a)
The edge of the parting medium

 (b)
The slip planes

 (c)
The soft vinyl layers between the main layers

 (d)
The vinyl layers around the edge of each window.

 (6)
Make sure you can tell the difference between the delamination and the items above.

 (7)
Chips are flakes or layers of the glass broken from the surface (Fig. 201). They usually occur on the surfaces made of the lamination in the areas that do not get heat. High internal window stresses usually cause the chips. They can also occur on the external glass surfaces if these are struck by a sharp object. Chips look rough or grained and you can find them easily. The rough surface usually makes vision through the area very unsatisfactory. There are two types of chips: conchodial and V-shaped. Conchodial chips are usually circular or curved in shape with many small grooves that follow the outline of the outer edge. The V-shaped chips are sharp, narrow and look like they go to the inner side of the glass. These chips do not occur very often in tempered glass.

 (8)  Small bubbles in the vinyl core of a glass window are not a delamination and are not structurally dangerous. When the vinyl gets very hot (at approximately 230 degrees Fahrenheit), a gas comes out of the vinyl. The gas causes the small bubbles. It is not necessary to replace the window unless they decrease the visual qualities or continue to get larger. When they do show, it is possible there is a defective control system for the window heat system. When you find the bubbles, do a check of the control system for that specified window. Refer to 30-41-00/501.
