It is not always possible to tell how a glass window will act. A window that looks like it is in good condition can fail unexpectedly. A window that has scratches, chips or deliminations can last a long time before failure. It is not easy to make rules for a window replacement. You must consider each window individually. Operational experience, however, supports the conditions. You can use these as an aid when you determine if a window replacement is necessary.

Arcing occurs between two points that do not have continuity between them. A current goes from one point to the other. You can see where the arcing occurs. It usually occurs at or near the window bus bars. The bus bars are strips of conductive material painted along the top and the bottom internal side of the window. You can usually tell when the arcing occurred by the brown or black burned spots. If you find arcing in the main heating system, you must replace the window.
(a) Windshields with Z-channel seals can have edge heaters behind the pressure seal or have a thin wire installed in the vinyl interlayer. On windshields with installed wires, some arcing can occur. This usually shows as an intermittent glow. It is possible that you will not see the glow in the daylight. A break in the wire will cause the arcing. A small bubble (approximately 0.03 inch in diameter) will start in the vinyl interlayer. You can keep these windows installed on the airplane if the arcing does not distract the attention of the flight crew. Also, all other inspection conditions must be okay.
