 (4)  Remove a strip of the masking tape immediately on top of the space at the outer edge of the window.
 NOTE:____Use a sharp knife for this procedure. The result will be strips of masking tape that gives protection to the edges of the outer space between the window and the skin.

 (5)  Put a clean dry nylon cord in the bottom of the space at the outer edge of the window.
 NOTE: The cord must be longer than the distance around the edge of
____ the window. The ends of the cord must overlap approximately
 0.5 inch with the ends in the upper aft corner.

 (6)  Use a flow gun or a spatula to apply the aerodynamic smoother into the space until it is fully filled.
 NOTE: Smoother is available in different work lives that are
____ satisfactory for a number of tasks. You must apply the smoother during the applicable work life. Do not let air get mixed in below the smoother.

 WINDOW NO. 3 - INSPECTION/CHECK

 1.  General_______
 A. A window which has an unsatisfactory visual condition must be replaced.
 (1)  Different types of window damage are specified below:
 (a)  
Crazing: Crazing is a number of very small cracks perpendicular to the surface of the plastic. Because of the very small width of the cracks, crazing is not easy to see when you look directly at the surface. You can see crazing by a reflection of the smooth surfaces of the cracks, at different angles to the light.

 (b)  
Crack: A crack has width which you can see when you look directly at the surface. A crack can become larger in any direction. The angle that the crack becomes larger depends on the direction of the force. A crack in the stretched acrylic can have chevron or clamshell growth lines (Fig. 601). A crack will become larger from a stressed area such as a scratch or crazing.

 (c)  
Scratch: A scratch is the removal or movement of material from the surface of the window along a line. The depth and width are usually small.

 (d)  
Chips:


 1)  Spall (shell type) chips have a circular or rounded outer edge. There are many small ridges that follow the shape of the outer edge. The ridges become smaller at the center or the deepest point of the chip, similar to a clamshell.
